Service can use the hourly reading capabilities to troubleshoot high bill complaints. Often, when a member can see what (s)he's used on an hourly basis over a period of time, (s)he can see a pattern and realize, “7 a.m. means coffee, cinnamon rolls out of the oven, both teenagers and the husband are taking showers," or “Oh, that's the week my sister and her dog came to visit." The AMI also makes transfers of service seamless and immediate—no need to schedule an appointment or wait for the power to be turned on in a new home or apartment. The money-saving time-of-use rate and the Prepaid

electric billing program are possible because of the capability of the system to take regular daily readings. Members utilizing OEC's Prepaid billing program have bills averaging 12 percent lower than traditional billing members. This may be in part because Prepaid users are more aware of when and how they use electricity by virtue of daily reading notices. Engineering uses AMI for load and reliability studies.

Dispatching can tell immediately where crews are needed. "We've come a long way from mechanical meters with spinning cogs and tacks on a map showing where crews are working," Spencer said. Along with more advanced infrastructure, the

equipment and materials needed to service nearly 50,000 meters is greater than was needed in 1965, when the current warehouse was built. The 7,500 sq. ft. building served the needs of OEC for almost 50 years, but we've outgrown it. When estimates on a renovation came back higher than new construction, plans to build a new warehouse were made. "This building is designed to see OEC through the

will not be torn down. It will be used to store materials currently stocked in the yard like underground wire and transformers, protecting them from the elements. OEC has grown and changed much in its 75 years.

Improved service and reliability through innovation will remain our guide.
