Co-op Growth The Logistics of Growth In 1965, Oklahoma Electric Cooperative had just


over 6,000 accounts. Members read their own meters, mailing in the readings with their bill each month. Today OEC powers close to 50,000 meters and reads  run a utility of this size has both increased and changed tremendously over the past 47 years. The Meter and Logistics department consists of


 employees all working to bring in, distribute and utilize equipment while monitoring power, service and material quality. OEC began installing advanced meter


infrastructure (AMI) nearly two decades ago. As of by Tory Tedder


2008, all residential and commercial accounts use the AMI technology. AMI meters communicate electric usage data over


the power lines. Data is delivered to the substation where it transfers to a T1 cable (a line with a large bandwidth for large amounts of data) through which it reaches OEC's operations center. Unlike some wireless technologies, this delivery method is both reliable and safe. It consists of voltage reports and meter readings several times a day. The ability to call upon this data has improved response times and in many cases allows  John Spencer, vice president of metering, recounts


 showing unusually high meter readings for a typically low-usage account. "We were able to call up the member and say, 'This


is the situation, has something changed on your end?’" said Spencer. The call brought the member's attention  
