GREEN COUNTRY Continued from Page 35

Planning your trip

“One of the best ways to visit Green Country is to take an extended weekend, pick a small area and go see everything you can in the area while you’re there,” Buchanan said. Whether you have a specifi c destination in mind, or just want to take a weekend road trip through the area, Green Country has a never- ending list of things to do and places to see. “I think it’s important to take vacations in your home state,“ Buchanan said. “You not only fi nd out where you’re from, but you also support your local economy. You don’t need to travel far to have a great vacation.” By stumbling upon the town of Foraker, a ghost town with sidewalks to nowhere and Natural Falls State Park, where parts of the movie Where the Red Fern Grows were fi lmed, Buchanan has learned to expect the unexpect- ed when it comes to vacationing in beautiful Green Country.

“There are lots of hidden jewels in Green Country,” Buchanan said. “There are hidden treasures if you’re bold enough to go down a dirt road.”

A trip through Green Country, or “God’s Country” as Hart referred to it, will prove to be a rewarding trip with its unique and varied history, numerous recreational activities and breathtaking scenery. But according to him, no one is more fortunate than those who ac- tually live in the area. “After 22 years in the military and all the places I have seen and lived, I always knew where home was,” Hart said. “I can honestly say no place is better or prettier than Green Country.”

Upcoming Events

“October is a great time to visit Green Country’s attractions and events because of the cooler weather and the variety of activi-

ties offered,” Swindell said. “From the Fall Traders En- campment at Woolaroc near Bartlesville to Oktoberfest celebrations in both Tulsa and Ponca City, there’s something to delight just about every visitor. Throw in some great barbeque competitions, car shows, a wine festival or two and a national horse show, and you have an idea of the fun offerings in Green Country during October.“
