Two things you wouldn’t immediately associate with Spain are Hallowe’en and Oktoberfest, yet the canny folks at PortAventura know the pulling power in such seasonal events. For three nights only – September 8, 9 and 10 – a big German party was held to kick off the autumn season. Staged inside the Mexico and Far West areas of the park, there was a Wild West flavour to the proceedings with a rodeo bull on offer in addition to folk and country music. But the Oktoberfest spirit was kept alive thanks to a plentiful supply of beer and sausages, plus staff in Bavarian costume. PortAventura in fact been “celebrating” Hallowe’en for the last 13 years, and so popular are the fright-filled proceedings that they now last a full six weeks. From September 29 to November 11, monsters, zombies and ghosts will prowl amongst Port Aventura’s attractions, most of which will be still open to the public thanks to the warm Mediterranean weather. New for 2012 is Fire Curse, a walk-through attraction that tells the story of a curse against explorers looking for the hidden treasures of a Mayan pyramid. Visitors will also be brave other walk-throughs including Horror in Penitence and Fear Jungle. Four new shows on offer this Hallowe’en including Mystery: Resurrection, Bandarra Street Orkestra, Sésamo Aventura Halloween Special and Temple of Fire: the Mayan curse, plus the return of Loves for Vampires and Bang Bang Halloween. Bringing each night to a close will be the Halloween Parade.
