Think globally — act locally
Whether personally delivering books to children and scholars in Ghana, helping to rebuild homes for low-income families in Louisiana, or creating a business plan for local Latino business owners, Eastern students are dedicated to giving back to those in need. Faculty members often incorporate service learning into their courses, giving students the chance to gain practical experience while making a difference in others’ lives.
As a result, Eastern students contribute thousands of hours in serving the local community and beyond each year.
Recent projects have included: • Mentoring students in local schools • Building homes in North Carolina • Math tutoring for inmates at the Brooklyn Correctional Institute
• Coordinating local blood drives • Developing and facilitating programs on nutrition and gardening
• Bog cleanups and conservation projects for statewide organizations
Eastern hosts an annual “Day of Giving” Thanksgiving dinner event and large-scale canned food drive for more than 400 community residents.
The Center for Community Engagement connects students to service learning and volunteer opportunities, including the annual Town Pride, Town Wide event where students plant gardens, clean up the sidewalks and help paint downtown buildings.
44,000 hours valued at $1.3 million contributed to the community annually
