Flooring and Surfaces

requirements, and when Asda Stores Ltd wanted to update the flooring in their restaurant area key considerations were cleanliness and simple maintenance, resilience and an attractive appearance. The extensive and rigorous daily cleaning routine had taken its toll on the existing floor covering and underlying adhesive, and it was decided that the new system needed to be impervious to water to avoid any problems in the future. Asda decided on the new IOBAC

magnetised flooring system as an efficient and environmentally sustainable way to replace the old flooring. This system uses 3M magnetic technology to install flooring without the need for adhesive, minimising disruption during the installation process. The reduced installation time, as well as lower material and labour costs all equate to financial savings for Asda, which was a real benefit. Christopher Peers, Asda National

Architectural and Specification Manager, comments: "We chose to specify IOBAC magnetised flooring technology with Karndean Designflooring in the Asda café, as we were looking for a fast, efficient, durable and sustainable way to install the café floor. As the 3M paramagnetic resin subfloor dries in 60 minutes, the entire installation was completed overnight ensuring sales were not affected.” Sustainability is an increasing focus for

retailers, and when Poplars Garden Centre in Bedfordshire was looking to incorporate a wholelife heating system at the store, the environmentally conscious values of its staff were an important consideration. Rather than going for a traditional heating method such as radiators and air conditioning units, the team decided a

surface heating and cooling system would be an excellent option to deliver reductions in energy consumption. The system was based around different

heating zones, allowing independent adjustment to cater for the different temperature and timing requirements of the various trading areas. Because the heating was all hidden under the floor, more retail space was made available increasing the trading area. David Little, Managing Director at

Poplars Garden Centre, said: “Not only did we want to offer a warm and welcoming environment for our customers, we also wanted to be as energy conscious as possible.” The heating system from Warmafloor also requires far less maintenance, saving time and money for Poplars, which is an important factor for Little; “The reduced need for system downtime is particularly important in a retail environment that is open to the public for long periods of time; in our case seven days a week!” The team at Warmafloor are committed

to the development of sustainable products, as Mike Lamb, Managing Director of Warmafloor explains; “In the year that Britain hosted the Olympic Games with such success, we need to remember the lasting legacy that buildings have. We have a duty to deliver welldesigned, efficient and sustainable buildings that can be enjoyed for generations to come.” Creating the perfect retail atmosphere is all about ticking every box, and ensuring that flooring and surfaces compliment a brand’s identity is a huge part of this. Get it right, and hopefully your store will be walked all over!
