THE FIRE ALARM and emergency lighting system at the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury has had 5,000m of Prysmian FP200 Gold and FP Plus installed using FP Firefix clips.

Paul McNaughton, managing director at Darke and

Taylor, the company that conducted the electrical installation, explained, “FP200 Gold and FP Plus are satisfying products to work with as the cables can be terminated and stripped with ease. We also requested additional Prysmian FP Firefix components to secure a speedy installation.”

The 316L stainless steel FP Firefix clips are coated with an intumescent red or white finish and meet the fixing requirements of BS5839-1:2002 and BS5266- 1:2011 for fire resistant cables.

FP200 Gold and FP Plus comply with fire alarm standard, BS 5839 and the emergency lighting stan-

dard, BS 5266 as ‘standard’ and ‘enhanced’ fire resis- tant cable. In addition, FP200 Gold and FP Plus have received BASEC and LPCB approval and both incor- porate Prysmian’s damage resistant Insudite, which reduces the risk of third party damage. www.prysmian.com

Supplying one of the world’s biggest gas projects

Commenting on winning the contract, Roxtec UK managing director, Graham O’Hare, said “This is a prestigious project for Roxtec to work on and it demonstrates our expertise in the oil and gas sector. “Specifically we supplied cable seals with an in- built electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) system to protect the plant’s electrical systems. The seals are installed in the modular instrumentation build- ings and they will help ensure the safe operations of control systems.”

THE CHEVRON OPERATED Gorgon Project, on Barrow Island, Western Australia, one of the world’s biggest gas developments, will have mate- rials supplied by cable and pipe seal manufac- turer, Roxtec.

Roxtec also supplied Ex rated seals (ATEX Directive compliant) for use in hazardous areas as well as cable and pipe penetrations for the blast walls and floors in the substations. www.roxtec.com

Control technology for Dubai hotel

PRIVA BUILDING INTELLIGENCE has supplied its control technology to the Grand Millennium Dubai, a new 343 room, five star hotel.

Installed by the BMS Division of Optima International LLC, the technology is helping the hotel negate the soaring cost of utilities in the United Arab Emirates. Although hotels are fairly typi- cal projects for Optima, The Grand Millennium is a particu-

larly large facility. With the cost of electricity in Dubai currently around four times more expen- sive than in the UK, for example, the emphasis on effective build- ing control is clear. Optima’s Michael Scriven commented, “Energy is a govern- ment run utility and hence there is a lack of competition - electric- ity costs have doubled in the past three years and it’s the single biggest operating cost by far. “This is exaggerated by colos- sal air conditioning costs in the summer months when the aver- age outside temperature is 40°C. A BMS can save a fortune here by monitoring and controlling ser- vices such as lighting, water heating, ventilation and cool- ing/air conditioning thus ensur- ing they operate at maximum levels of efficiency and economy. This is achieved by maintaining the optimum balance between conditions, energy usage and operating requirements.” www.priva.co.uk

BUSINESS ELECTRICITY SUP- PLIER Haven Power has made it to the finals of the Energy Awards. The Ipswich-based supplier will go head to head with several of ‘The Big Six’ before finding out who is crowned supplier of the year in December.

Sales and marketing director, Richard Robey, commented, “Being chosen as a finalist among some of the bigger suppliers con- firms to us that business cus- tomers want more than just a big marketing campaign from their electricity supplier.

“As prices rise and energy policy becomes more complex, businesses are increasingly seeing the benefits of having a supplier that makes electricity purchasing simpler and more effective.” www.havenpower.com

EPLAN takes over Harness Expert

SOLUTION PROVIDER EPLAN has taken over the development and sales rights to Harness Expert, the 3D/2D software for cable harness engineering. This extension to its range will allow EPLAN to offer its customers more comprehensive support for all aspects of cable project management.

The strategic purchase of the Harness Expert will allow EPLAN to tackle new segments of industry, including apparatus engineering, rail and specialist vehicle technology, aviation, telecommunications and medical technology. At the same time, there is an increasing demand from within its own customer base for the implementation of 1:1 connections via cable har- nesses, as the number of circuit board-based units in control cabi- nets and devices is increasing constantly. This new software is the perfect complement to EPLAN Electric P8, the com-

pany's own CAE solution, which has previously handled the engi- neering of single wires and sheathed cables in the control cabinet and field components. “The purchase of the Harness Expert software makes our port- folio broad enough to cover all engineering requirements within the global market. It also gives us a considerable compet- itive advantage, especially in the international market,” said Maximilian Brandl, chairman of the Executive Board at EPLAN Software & Service. www.eplan.co.uk
