licat Scientific, Inc. now offers its BB9 Communication Module in a USB model. The BB9-USB replaces the standard RS-232 serial
connection, providing a direct computer connection for monitoring and control of Alicat Flow devices. Alicat's USB-99 monitors and controls up to nine Alicat devices from a single computer. The BB9 joins up to nine Alicat flow and pressure devices to a single computer for independent monitoring and operation. This remote monitoring saves time and money, especially in flow instrument installations where devices are a long distance from the control site. The BB9 will also distribute power to connected Alicat devices. In installations with more than nine Alicat flow devices, multiple BB9s can control up to 26 Alicat devices. Alicat flow and pressure devices connect to the BB9-USB via Alicat’s eight pin mini din connector and DC-62 cables.

water pumping station in Lancashire is saving over £19,000 per year on its energy costs following the replacement of its existing Heenan variable-speed drives with new drives from ABB. The Drummer’s Lane water pumping station, owned by United Utilities, is an intermediate pumping station that is used to manage the distribution of water between Prescot and Aspel reservoirs. Tony Holden, field

service engineer with United Utilities with responsibility for Drummer’s Lane, says: “The incumbent drives were aging and the components were degrading in performance. They were also becoming increasingly expensive to maintain as the components became harder to source. ABB drives had replaced equipment in other facilities owned by United Utilities. “It was a natural progression to use ABB drives at Drummer’s Lane,” says Holden. “It is a very good, reliable product, very robust with a good performance over its lifecycle. The keypad is very user friendly and the flux optimisation of the drive gives good energy savings.”

BB has won an order for a three-year service agreement from Codelco (Corporacion Nacional del Cobre de Chile), the world's largest copper producer. ABB will maintain and optimise the installed gearless mill drive system and related equipment at Codelco's Andina copper mine in northern Chile. Codelco is the world's largest copper producer, with an annual production capacity of 1.76 million tons of copper. With this enormous output, any unplanned plant downtime or equipment failure can result in high costs and production losses. Codelco decided to invest in a sustainable service plan by signing a three year term service agreement with ABB. This will keep production running at an optimal level and to reduce the risk of unscheduled downtime. With this comprehensive scope of services, ABB will ensure that the equipment in Andina will operate at the highest possible production and energy efficiency levels. Dedicated ABB expert teams in Chile and Switzerland will manage this service contract.
