is the ability to incorporate easy access panels to simplify maintenance and inspection, because of the rigid structure provided by the composite construction materials. Rapid access is less easy to achieve with other fire protection methods such as blankets or intumescent coatings. As there is no specific international standard for this application area, process plant designers tend to employ the rapid temperature rise fire curves of ANSI/UL 1709, a standard used to protect structur- al steel in buildings. Hydrocarbon pro- cessing plants are one of the key applica- tion areas, as fires here can reach 1,093ºC within five minutes.

Intertec has introduced a new range of cabinets to protect critical process equip- ment in hazardous areas against very high temperature fires.

The cabinets help to ensure that equip- ment such as emergency shutdown valves remain operational by keeping them below 60ºC for periods of up to 90 minutes in the event of a hydrocarbon-based fire, to allow time for controlled shutdown. The new 90 minute protection capability has been test- ed against the ANSI/UL 1709 standard by

the test body, MPA Dresden. This provides a broad margin of safety to ensure that plant operators are able to continue to remote control critical valves to ensure that the process cannot feed the flames with flammable materials, or that vessels do not burst from over-pressuri- sation. It additionally provides as much control time as possible to support per- sonnel evacuation procedures and fire fighting responses. A further benefit offered by the cabinets

Intertec uses to manufacture these cabi- nets has a high resistance to weather and the corrosive effects of salt and aggres- sive chemicals - making it suitable for use in harsh environments such as off- shore platforms. The sandwich construc- tion means that cabinets can be made using bonding techniques, avoiding ther- mal short cuts between inner and outer skins. A composite sandwich cabinet typ- ically provides more than twice the ther- mal insulation of a steel shelter with the same insulation thickness. Intertec www.intertec.info T: 0800 756 1102

Nittan Europe has announced that it will now be offering the VESDA early warning aspirating smoke detection (ASD) from Xtralis. VESDA by Xtralis very early warning aspirating smoke detec- tion solutions with continuous air sampling come with multi- level warnings and a wide range of sensitivity that does not degrade or change over time, so even minute levels of smoke can be detected before a fire has time to escalate. As a result, they are well suited to environments such as utilities, oil and gas etc, as well as situations where business continuity is imperative. Nittan will be supporting the full VESDA detector range, as well as modules to detect haz- ardous/combustible gases. Nittan www.nittan.co.uk T: 01483 769 555
