Products Cabling Cat 5e cable for extreme environments

Alpha Wire has extended its XTRA-GUARD range with the addition of industrial Ethernet cable, designed for applications that require a chemical, abrasion and sunlight resistant Cat 5e cable with a temperature range of -50°C up to 125°C. The range features an abrasion resistant thermoplastic elastomer jacket and is designed to provide rugged, durable con- nectivity for challenging networking needs.

The cables are available in a choice of unshielded, foil shield, or Supra-Shield foil/braid. Alpha Wire’s Supra-Shield uses a combination of aluminum, polyester, alu- minum foil and tinned copper braid to offer EMI performance and flexibility. Additionally, the cables are UV and fluid resistant, meet UL 1666 Riser and CSA FT- 4 flame tests, and are suitable for use in NFPA 79 applications. The cables are also available in a temper-

ature range of -50°C up to 125°C on FEP- insulated conductors and -50°C up to 105°C on polyethylene insulated conductors. The TPE jacket is available in black with standard lengths of 152m (500ft). Other colours are

Providing an alternative

Flexicon has extended its range of polyurethane coated flexible conduit to meet the needs of liquid tight applications where high abrasion resistance and high fatigue life is needed.

The new range has an IP rating of IP66, IP67, IP68 and IP69k and the new LTPPU system offers low temperature performance (down to -40°C), and is halogen-, sulphur- and phosphorous-free. The outer cover does not wrinkle when bent, and is resistant to oils and greases. It is also UV resistant making it well suited for external applications. The conduit is available in several different diameters ranging from 10mm to 63mm with a number of different compression fittings depend- ing on the method of termination required. The conduit can be used with Flexicon’s range of liquid tight fittings which are available in metric, PG and NPT thread variants. It is also compatible with the company’s new range of EXD conduit fit-

tings, which are suitable for hazardous areas. Ian Gibson, technical director for Flexicon, said, “Polyurethane is becoming a more prominent material for flexible conduit in Europe as an alter- native to PVC.

“By introducing polyurethane coated flexible con- duit, we are offering the market even more choice, enabling customers to match the cable protection needed with the hazards faced. We have 47 different conduit systems available in our current range and for some applications a polyurethane coated flexible conduit system will be the best choice.” Flexicon www.flexicon.uk.com T: 01675 466 900

A collaboration for safer cables

In order to develop optimum formulations for flame retardant cables and hoses for automotive and rail applications, wire and cable manufacturers have been working with DuPont and its Vamac polymer compounds.

DuPont has developed a combination of properties for its Vamac compounds that combine fire and oil resistance with low tempera- ture flexibility (without plasticiser), and superior heat resistance up to 175°C.

These new flame retardant cables and hoses are well suited for the highly regulated rail (power and communication cables), auto- motive (transmission wire cables, battery cables and protective igni- tion wire sleeving), marine and military industries. DuPont www.dupont.com T: 01438 734 000

available as special orders.

Suitable applications for the new range of cables include robotics/actuators at the machine device level, PLCs at the control level, and servers at the corporate enterprise level, along with any application that includes temperature extremes, outdoor, mechanical abuse, exposure to chemicals or electrically noisy environments. Industries and organisations that will benefit from this new cable include military, oil and gas, min- ing, high speed communications, process control systems, safety and security inter- connect and semi-conductor OEMs. Alpha Wire www.alphawire.com T: 0800 288 8809

protection with flexible conduit

Harnessflex, a supplier of flexible conduit and fitting systems for off-road and heavy vehicles, can supply highly flexible HNC stan- dard weight conduit in all popu- lar sizes. PA 11 conduit has been specifically formulated to meet the mechanical and environmen- tal requirements of vehicles, pro- viding their critical vehicle wiring with environmental and mechanical protection.

The high flexibility and frac- ture resistance of HNC conduit is important for applications where there is repeated movement. It provides protection against mechanical shock and can with- stand extreme temperatures. Harnessflex www.harnessflex.com T: 01675 464 930

Designed to meet the cabling require- ments of a variety of industries, including rail, lift and food, igus has launched its new chainflex CF Special cable range. The new additions include the CF Special.544, an anti-microbial cable for applications that require stringent levels of hygiene, such as the food and bottling industries. The cable’s anti-microbial properties are contained throughout the composition of the jacket material, rather than just a coating, and limit the spread of micro-organisms. There is also the halogen-free cable CF Special.414, for dynamic moving applications in rail vehicles. This cable has low smoke and toxicity properties, is fire retardant, has a low toxic density,

is safe and is designed in accordance with government fire regulations. The TPE core offers up to two million cycles in an igus energy chain.

For high tensile loads, Ethernet cable CF182.045 and Profibus cable CF182.001 are suitable for hanging applications of up to 50m, such as those found in rack operating devices, hanging control units and elevators. Both cables feature a low adhesive, abrasion resistant PUR jacket material with embedded aramid webbing. All cables are tested for effectiveness and life span, and are accredited with the relevant industry standards. igus www.igus.co.uk T: 01604 677 240
