News Industry Comment Degree courses aren’t the only route


If you’re like me, then you were proba- bly one of the millions of people who were on the edge of their seat during Team GB’s stupendous performance at the recent London Olympics. Whether it was cheering on Mo Farah or Jess Ennis in the Olympic Stadium or learn- ing the finer points of team dressage, the much anticipated event certainly captured the imagination, along with the country’s attention. However, one epic battle that may have gone unnoticed is the one to keep the power on as a result of the huge demand the games placed on the net- work, and the potential consequences of down-time. With 24/7 power a necessity during the games, its protec- tion was absolutely vital. THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS all across the coun- try recently picked up their A-Level results, on a day that will, for many, signal the beginning of a university education. However, Diane Johnson, skills ambassador for the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA), claims that degrees aren’t the only option for young people and that government needs to stop playing politics with the qualifications system. She commented, “A university degree can be a valuable asset to a career, but it’s not the only option, or even the best choice for all young people. Not everyone wants or can afford to go to university, where they could rack up thousands of pounds of debt with- out a guarantee of a job at the end. Apprenticeships offer a bona fide alternative route to employment and have done so for decades.” However, Johnson warned “All too often, voca- tional training is seen as the poor relation to acad- emia. If apprenticeships are to remain a credible alternative to a degree, we need to value them and government needs to stop ‘dumbing down’ stan-


dards for political reasons.”


She concluded, “Our society needs skilled people, regardless of their qualification route. Today’s school and university leavers are tomorrow’s taxpayers and industry leaders, and will be those helping to support an ever increasing number of pensioners. It is not right that they should be used for short term political gain. They deserve better from our government and educa- tion system.” www.eca.co.uk
