BY NOW MANY OF you have already submitted your entries for the 2013 Business Travel Awards. But if you want to be in with a chance on the industry’s biggest night of the year and haven’t yet entered, don’t delay: the deadline for submissions is September 14. Don’t forget, the 22 categories include the hotly contested Travel Buyer of the Year. And of course, with more than 800 guests already booked to attend, the remaining tables are going fast, so now’s the time to reserve your place at the gala evening. Visit www.businesstravelawards.com Talking of parties, I want to thank all our guests who joined us for Summer in the City, in association with Qatar Airways and sponsored by Chambers Travel Management. It was an excellent evening, as you can see from the pictures on p28. I hope you enjoy the features in
this issue: I was struck by the irony of those who manage showbiz tour travel (p52) talking about strict budget controls and precision planning, while our feature on
Even Guns n’
Roses have a travel policy
compliance (p64) looks at reining in the champagne mavericks. Even Guns n’ Roses have a travel policy! As the summer holidays come to an end, it’s back to school for business travel, too: our diary (p122) is packed with educational events: this month sees the ACTE/MS-UK forum in London and the GBTA Europe conference in Budapest, while ITM’s buyer forum and ACTE’s education conference take place in October. Our feature on associations (p58) illustrates how much travel buyers
value these events for gaining and sharing knowledge. It seems in our sector you’re never
too experienced to learn something new. And alongside education, networking is highly prized. I’ve noticed how travel people find value in networking from dawn till, er..., dawn, whether it’s an intensive breakfast briefing, a 9am seminar or an enthusiastic 2am brainstorming session in the hotel bar. But of course our industry has always been good at successfully mixing business with pleasure. It’s only rock’n’roll... but we like it.
