BODY CONTOURING THE LIPOSONIX WAY: Q&A

In this interview, Mark Jewell shares his views on Solta Medical, the body contouring market, Liposonix HIFU technology, treatment experience, clinical results, patient satisfaction and ROI.

MARK JEWELL, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor Plastic Surgery, Oregon Health Science University, Portland, Oregon USA; Principal Investigator, Liposonix Pivotal Trial (USA)

Solta Medical How would you describe the partnership and support provided by Solta Medical to its customers? Solta Medical provides skin resurfacing, skin tightening and non-invasive body contouring medical devices that are used in cosmetic medicine and aesthetic plastic surgery worldwide. Its portfolio of aesthetic medical devices is extensive. Solta Medical is focused on the long-term relationship with its customers and the company provides an excellent customer experience. I also really like the commitment of Solta Medical to research and innovation.

The body contouring market What are patients asking for when coming to you for body contouring procedures? Patients are looking for safe, effective, and minimal downtime procedures. Everyone’s needs are different, from the non-invasive to conventional liposuction, to excisional body

contouring procedures. I believe that it is important to offer patients something from all three areas.

What trends do you see with patients requesting non-invasive body contouring procedures? Patients today are seeking procedures that can be performed outside of a surgical centre and procedures that do not require an anaesthetic. While surgical procedures produce the most immediate and dramatic outcomes, it is with greater expense, risk, and recovery time. Patients are willing to accept more modest improvements than surgery with a Liposonix treatment in return for less risk, less expense, and no recovery time.

Technology What are your thoughts on HIFU technology for non-invasive body contouring? The Liposonix device is unique with its technology, high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) energy, to create a focal zone of heating. The heat results in a dual response — thermal destruction of targeted fat cells and contraction/ thickening of subcutaneous collagen. There is an abundance of scientific research published in peer-

reviewed scientific journals on the technology, safety, tolerability and effectiveness of the Liposonix HIFU. The Liposonix device underwent rigorous scientific investigations that led to clearances in the US, Canada, and EU.

How would you compare the Liposonix system to others on the market? Unlike other non-invasive body-contouring devices, Liposonix is unique because it offers both the reduction in subcutaneous adipose tissue and collagen tightening. Cryolipolysis technology only affects the superficial fat and does not tighten collagen. Non-invasive external laser devices appear to be ineffective at producing body contouring

outcomes.

Radiofrequency devices appear effective only in the skin layer, but not deeper. Non-invasive, unfocused ultrasound devices cannot tighten collagen layers.

Treatment experience and clinical results Describe the ideal patient for this procedure. The ideal patient for a Liposonix treatment is male or female, who is of normal weight and with good skin tone, and has localised fatty deposits in the abdomen and the waist. Realistic expectations are also important, as the Liposonix procedure takes approximately 8–12 weeks to produce the final outcome. Individuals who seek more immediate outcomes should consider a surgical option.
