The Creative Assembly

With great studio expansion comes great responsibility, and as it has grown its team and its remit The Creative Assembly has maintained high quality, high scoring titles. Tentpole releases like Total War: Shogun 2 were complemented by a move into smartphones.

EA Dice

Battlefield 3 was a bit hit, and EA Dice has kept fuelling that with a series of additions, expansion and services. In 2012 alone, the studio has released a new Battlefield Premium membership service that provides early access to all five- expansion packs, The Ultimate Shortcut Bundle DLC as well as a Battlelog iOS app that brings the social platform to mobiles.

Rare

Continuing to grow its reputation as a technology- pushing studio, this UK team continued to innovate in motion gaming with Kinect Sports 2, the latest title in a franchise which has sold in excess of 6.5 million copies so far.

Red Lynx

Only acquired by Ubisoft in November of last year, Red Lynx struck an immediate success with Trials Evolution, which has been downloaded over 100,000 times in a day and was so popular that Microsoft had been forced to draft in additional sales servers. A gem in Ubisoft’s already rich studio empire.

Rocksteady Studios

The London studio’s critical and commercial hit Batman: Arkham City was one of the games highlights of 2011. The quality of the studio’s creation can be measured by the fact it is still doing business –with a Game of the Year Edition on the way along with an exclusive Wii U edition supported by Rocksteady also incoming.

TT Games

You don’t need us to tell you that TT Games have had another superb year playing with LEGO – last year’s titles saw Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean and ninjas given the brick treatment with the traditional blend of humour and family fun gameplay. It’s a combination that has helped TT sell 55m LEGO games worldwide to date.

Ubisoft Montpelier

Arguably Ubisoft’s most daring and diverse studio. The team last year took a film licence and created a platform game in Tintin, and brought an offbeat 2D platform game to the boxed market rather than making it download-only with the visually arresting Rayman Origins.

Bigpoint Hamburg

In its ten-year history, the studio has managed over 1,000 game portals across the web, attracting a quarter of a million new players each day to its output. And after a string of popular online titles such as Battlestar Galactica Online, Dark Orbit and Farmerama, this year saw the number of users signed up to Bigpoint’s free-to-play browser games hit the 250 million-player milestone.
