editor’s note The contract is king

The recent Angel events focusing on the data centre, outsourcing and managed services were a great opportunity to listen to a fascinating range of speakers explain what is happening in the IT space right now and, as importantly, what they believe will happen in the future.

BYOD and managed services are, apparently, unstoppable in terms of the momentum they already have. Anyone seeking to resist them will make King Canute’s task of turning back the tide look elementary by comparison. However, embracing these two developments with a shrug of the shoulders is not the recommended course of action.

Both BYOD and managed services do offer some major business benefits to any organisation, but they also provide many potential pitfalls. Many of the speakers spent much of their time emphasising that BYOD must be implemented according to a corporate policy that recognises the enabling aspect of the idea, at the same time as protecting against the security risk inherent in allowing employees to bring all manner of mobile devices into the work environment. It may well take time, and employees may start to resent the security hoops they have to jump through before their own IT devices are ‘approved’, but the time taken is as nothing if something goes badly wrong thanks to misbehaviour of an unchecked device.

Similarly, with managed services, signing up to one or more service without checking the small print, and talking with the provider, to check that your and their expectations are one and the same, is not just advisable, but compulsory, unless you want to spend ages on the phone at a later date trying to find out what has gone wrong!

Finally, congratulations to all the winners of the Datacentre Solutions Awards (ful details on Page 18). The Awards were a fitting end to the two days of Angel-organised conferences focusing on IT transformation, and demonstrated that there are plenty of vendors and service suppliers out there adapting to this ‘new world’ and offering end users the chance to do likewise.
