Data for Recovered Paper is covered in more detail elsewhere in the Annual Review. In summary, mill usage fell slightly due to a statistical anomaly in the previous year’s data and very likely increased in line with the rise in production. Mill usage of virgin fibres increased by 3.4% and is likely to grow further once the new machine at Disley Tissue is operational as it is understood this will be virgin-fibre based. The two domestic producers of mechanical woodpulps saw their integrated production rise by around 2.5%.
Production of Corrugated Board
The tough markets being experienced by the various packaging materials are confirmed by CPI’s Corrugated production data, covering some 85% of this as the largest volume of paper-based packaging materials. The area made by the major board producers fell back to 3.56 million ksm, a fall of 1.1% compared to 2010, but above the recent low of 3.52 million ksm produced during the recessionary year of 2009. There being two fewer production days during 2011, average weekly production fell more modestly to 71,813 ksm (-0.3%). Sheet feeders fared little better, ending the year having produced 1,068,554 ksm of board (-1.0%).
