ENCOURAGING INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT WITH THE DODS MANUFACTURING DIALOGUE In 2011 CPI agreed to co-sponsor the Dods Manufacturing Dialogue.
This programme was developed to enable sponsors to engage with the Government on the important topic of support for manufacturing.
It brought together a number of organisations from a range of sectors within the Manufacturing Industry, including Boeing, Astra Zeneca and the Food & Drink
Federation.
The programme was coordinated by Dods, the UK’s leading public affairs and policy communication specialist.
It used extensive national and regional research to pinpoint the policies that UK manufacturing wants to see implemented to secure its future competitiveness in the global arena.
Early in the year, the programme began with research amongst key stakeholders and a panel of industry respondents. Directors of manufacturing companies were asked to comment on the levers that the Government needs to pull to help UK manufacturers grow.
This research then informed a series of three round-table discussions in Westminster, designed to be iterative and develop the programme’s themes throughout the year:
• “Image of Manufacturing” in March. • “Manufacturing and the Economy” in May. • “The Future of Manufacturing: 5 Policy Requests” in September.
A further discussion was held in the Welsh Assembly in July and a Summit was held in Burnley, which was addressed by the Rt. Hon. Vince Cable MP.
During the Party Conference season a series of fringe meetings, specifically focused on UK Manufacturing, took place at all three main party conferences, which enabled the
10 sponsors to engage with Parliamentarians.
The dialogue concluded at a Parliamentary Reception in December, at which five specific policy recommendations to support manufacturing were presented to Ministers:
• To improve the skills base, specifically in STEM subjects - science, technology, engineering, maths.
• A strategic role for the Government, with increased investment in research and development.
• A review of the environmental regulation which puts pressure on energy and carbon prices.
• Engendering a political culture of optimism regarding the opportunity for manufacturing growth.
• Do more to assist SMEs by making finance available.
Copies of the final report Manufacturing a Greater Britain were circulated at the reception and CPI was pleased to see that the five key recommendations were used by Peers to inform their Lords debate in December.
Parliamentary Reception
We saw success at two Westminster Receptions during the year, with a very positive level of interest from MPs at both the Corrugated Sector Reception in October and a Packaging Federation event in June.
The Corrugated Sector has held its Annual Parliamentary Reception over the last four years and CPI was pleased to see that the event in October was a great success once again, with 18 Members of Parliament attending to speak to representatives of the Corrugated Packaging Industry.
The event, held in the Houses of Parliament in October, was sponsored by Dan Rogerson MP, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Packaging. In his address to the industry audience, Mr Rogerson, the Liberal Democrat MP for North Cornwall, said:
“I’ve seen in my own constituency the importance of the Corrugated Packaging Industry Paper - the sustainable, renewable choice
