Let’s
Editor’s note: This month Talk Shop comes from a business in Salisbury, one of my favourite cities. It has the most beautiful cathedral, well worth a visit if you have not done so already. I am biased as I spent a very happy childhood nearby and went to school there!
Teed Tools and DIY, Salisbury
How long have you been trading? We have been trading since Nov 1968, Mr. Teed came from industry doing stock control in London and decided to use his knowledge on tools and DIY by purchasing The Do it Yourself Centre Salisbury and then changed the name to Teed Tools and DIY in the early Nineties
What are your opening hours and which is your busiest day? Monday to Saturday 8:30am to 5:00pm. Saturday is busiest.
How many employees do you have? 2 full-time and 1 part-time
Do you have many regular customers? Yes, we have a number of regular customers, some being simple DIY enthusiasts others being sought-after tradesmen
When is your busiest time of year? Why do you think this is? It has become apparent that our busiest time of year is the Autumn and Winter months between August and January.
Do particular lines sell well at different times of year? We generally have good stock rotation all year, but on the run up to Christmas we partake in Toolbank’s promotion which boosts the sales of hand and power tools. We also offer cut to size timber which is good all year round.
Do you encourage reps to visit? We are always happy to see our reps, they can give us the information on all the best products out on the market. They can also inform us on any new products hitting the market.
How do you follow up if a product catches your eye? If a product were to catch our eye, we would then proceed to enquire about the chosen product. Reps are a good source of information - they can inform you about all the pro’s and con’s of the chosen product.
Why do you deal with particular tool companies? We do tend to deal with wholesalers that have links with all the companies for example, Stanley, Irwin, Hitachi and many, many more. If our wholesalers do not deal with a certain company that we are fond of, we will proceed to deal with that company direct.
How would a company with good products to sell come to your notice? We regularly attend trade shows and other events, if there is a good company out there, that will be the place to grab our attention and show off their products.
Do you have a surprising ‘best seller’? We have the Unger range of window cleaning equipment which is a very good seller.
What changes are afoot? There are not many immediate changes afoot, we are however completely re-vamping the shop to make it a more customer friendly environment.
How do you see the future of the tool trade? Reasonably positive. I think there will always be a need for tools especially as people are doing jobs around the house themselves.
Do you have a ‘Top Tip’? The customer always come first so listen to their requests and do your best to either get what they are after or, as importantly, give them advice on where to buy if you cannot help.
