The History of the Vacuum Cleaner A vacuum cleaner is a device that uses an air pump to create a partial vacuum to suck up dust and dirt. The dirt is collected by either a dustbag or a cyclone for later disposal. Vacuum cleaners, which are used in homes as well as in industry, exist in a variety of sizes and models— small battery-operated hand- held devices, domestic central vacuum cleaners to huge stationary industrial appliances that can handle several hundred litres of dust. In the mid 1800s, the Industrial Revolution with its accompanying pollution


resulted in attention turning to hygiene and cleanliness. Louis Pasteur made several significant discoveries which led him to theorize that infectious diseases were caused by microorganisms or germs. This focus led to the birth of the vacuum cleaner, one of the first of which was a carpet sweeper with a rotating brush and an elaborate bellows on top of the body to generate suction. Engineer Hubert Cecil Booth invented the Puffing Billy and his machines were used to clean the girders of the Crystal Palace vacuuming 26 tonnes of dust in four weeks using four machines. Through the next 50 years various inventions followed until in 1907 James


Murray Spangler invented the first portable electric suction cleaner. He sold the patent to his cousin William Hoover and became a partner in the Hoover’s Electric Suction Sweeping Company. Improvements followed including the first vacuum cleaner with a disposable bag in 1920, vacuums made of plastic in the 1930s, upright cleaners in the 1950s and the first self propelled vacuum at the end of the 60s. James Dyson invented the first bagless dual cyclone machine in the 1980s. As well as domestic use, the vacuum cleaner has many uses within


industry. Wet or wet/dry vacuum cleaners are a specialized form of the cylinder/drum models that can be used to clean up wet or liquid spills. They commonly can accommodate both wet and dry soilage; some are also equipped with a switch or exhaust port for reversing the airflow, a useful function for everything from clearing a clogged hose to blowing dust into a corner for easy collection. These vacuums are very versatile providing powerful suction to pick up dust, screws and nails and other debris. In these vacuums wet and dry materials never pass through any electrical or mechanical component, the motor unit is separate from the collection chamber to prevent any potential for electric shock. Pneumatic wet/dry vacuum cleaners are a specialized form of wet/dry models that hook up to compressed air.
