It all started with a "Metallbohrdreher" (handheld drill)

How Metabo grew from small beginnings at the end of the 1920s and became the worldwide active premium manufacturer of power tools that they are today

The name was

the game from the very beginning – even if it was shortened a little: In 1924, the Nürtingen based baker's son Albrecht Schnizler decided to move onwards and upwards. He founded the company Schnizler GmbH, in conjunction with Julius Closs, and started making and selling handheld drills. At the time, these were referred to as "Metallbohrdreher" in German. In 1929, the name of the tool was shortened to form the brand name of the company Metabowerke GmbH The middle of the twenties was, at first glance, not the ideal time to form a company. The world's economy was dragging itself through the first great economic crisis.

But every crisis is a breeding ground for winners and, in particular, in the more heavily industrialised Great Britain, industrial workers were happy to use the drills from Nürtingen to process metals.

Characterising the market with innovation In the years that followed, Metabo developed more and more innovations which shaped and continue to shape the power tool market today. In 1957 in Nürtingen, the world's first series production facilities for impact drills started operating and numerous ‘firsts’ followed in the production of professional

power tools. As early as 1983 Metabo boasted a cordless range and this at a time where perhaps the concept of battery driven machines seemed too futuristic for many European markets to comprehend. With a Paint Planer, in 1997, Metabo brought a completely new type of tool for efficiently removing paint and varnish to the market. With the PowerGrip in 2002, Metabo founded the category for compact cordless screwdrivers we know today as 10.8v and in 2010, the new range of crosscut and mitre saws ensured clean construction sites and workshops thanks to the best extraction function on the market. Today Metabo can deliver 250 different machines plus a huge portfolio of accessories, but more significantly in the past 18 months Metabo has accelerated its entry

into the formidable and dominating 18v market with not only a comprehensive family of trade orientated products and kits all backed by their XXL 3 year warranty (another first by the way), but also more recently a specialist range of cordless INOX finishing machines all of which operate their slide in 18v battery platform.

Class leading Cordless Technology The latest highlight of this rapid innovation rate in cordless is the introduction earlier this year of 4.0Ah batteries with Ultra M Technology for their full 18v range. Its

worth noting that their 4Ah units deliver up to 33% extra ‘fuel in the tank’ for the professional users compared to Metabo’s already advanced long life battery system. All this without any change in size or weight and still backed by a 3 year warranty. Only now, almost 6 months on, are other power tool brands starting to talk about introducing 4.0Ah solutions to catch up with Metabo who, in their continual push towards new technological advancements in cordless, are already looking ahead and working on even greater innovations in this key sector.
