LOADER PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS TIED TO NEW IT4 COMPLIANT ENGINES


Interim Tier 4 technologies will be implemented in Bobcat compact equipment to meet new air quality emissions standards. In conjunction with the engine updates, seven Bobcat 700 and 800 frame-size loaders will benefi t from signifi cant performance improvements, including operator comfort and productivity.


Bobcat Company continues to take steps toward complying with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) diesel engine emissions standards. This year, the process has reached a new phase with Interim Tier 4 (iT4) — a more stringent stage of mandates — affecting larger horsepower machines, including Bobcat® 700 and 800 frame-size loaders.


As part of integrating iT4 emissions technologies, Bobcat Company upgraded some of its loader operator and performance features, applying key iT4 technologies to provide enhanced loader functionality and reporting.


Many Bobcat machines are already iT4 (25 to 75 hp) or Final Tier 4 (under 25 hp) compliant. As air quality standards become more stringent with higher horsepower machines, 2012 has ushered in iT4 for machines with horsepower ranging from 75 to 174. Bobcat Company’s equipment in this horsepower class includes 700 and 800 frame-size loaders, consisting of seven M-Series loaders.

Advancements cut more emissions and improve air quality. Interim Tier 4 compliancy builds upon Tier 3 enhancements for greater emissions reductions and, in some cases, improved machine productivity and fuel effi ciency. Bobcat has adopted a systems approach to achieve standards compliance for all-new iT4 700 and 800 frame-size loaders.


Engine components


Electronic control unit (ECU) With the electronic capabilities of the iT4 ECU, engine RPM recovery is faster as the engine transitions between torque and horsepower demands, providing operators with shorter cycle times and improved productivity for attachment tasks such as excavating, grading or lifting materials.


High-pressure common-rail (HPCR) fuel system


This advanced fuel-injection design regulates fuel pressure and injection timing. First, the HPCR applies high pressure to fuel to transform it into an extremely fi ne mist that burns more thoroughly. The rail stores the high-pressure fuel and the ECU controls multiple fuel injections during each combustion cycle.


After-treatment systems


Diesel Oxidation Catalyst and Diesel Particulate Filter systems All Bobcat 700 and 800 frame-size loaders with iT4 engines will have a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a diesel particulate fi lter (DPF) housed in a single canister. This system replaces the muffl er for iT4 loaders. These after-treatment devices use fi ltering, heat and catalytic oxidation to lower emissions and reduce particulate matter (PM) in diesel engine exhaust. Through a DPF regeneration process, the high temperature of the exhaust burns accumulated PM off the DPF to keep it clean and working effi ciently.


Loaders feature new functionality, enhanced performance


Updating Bobcat 700 and 800 frame-size loaders to achieve iT4 emissions compliance extended to operator comfort and control, and machine performance improvements. Several of the loaders’ features have been upgraded such as improved fuel effi ciency, less noise, shorter cycle times and simplifi ed display navigation.


Breakout and lift forces get a boost Bobcat 800 frame-size loaders (S850 and T870) will have increased hydraulic pressures and industry-leading breakout and lift forces, resulting in shortened digging cycles. The substantially increased lift and tilt forces on the S850 and T870 will improve machine effi ciency in lifting heavy loads like pallets, concrete pieces and wet clay or dirt, and rolling them back to the carry position with less machine effort. For example, the iT4-equipped T870 will have nearly 17 percent more lift breakout force than the Tier 3 model.


Less noise, better fuel consumption The loaders’ new ECU — also instrumental in the fuel injection system — may be used in conjunction with an optional auto-idle function. Auto idle is only available for new Bobcat loaders with Selectable Joystick Controls. Auto idle allows for quieter operation and reduced fuel consumption. This feature automatically activates, causing the engine RPM to drop to idle if a loader’s functions are not used within 5 seconds. With the optional deluxe instrument panel, operators can set a preferred activation time between 4 and 240 seconds.

Horsepower management updates The new ECU incorporated in iT4 diesel engines can interpret information that will allow horsepower management — a standard feature of Bobcat Selectable Joystick Controls — to be based on engine torque instead of engine RPM. This minimizes engine stalling and provides more travel speed at low-mid engine RPM.
