Toby Gourley, AWD conference and exhibition chairman said: “MACH 2012 was a huge success with the AWD Welding World Village attracting 27 welding products businesses showcasing their product lines. I would like to thank them for their support and for being part of the only dedicated Welding Zone at MACH 2012. The village, the largest zone within the exhibi- tion, was visited by Stephen McPartland MP who talked with many of our exhibitors about the importance of manufacturing and skills in the UK. “With over 20,000 visitors overall and the Thursday atten- dance 23 per cent up on 2010, the AWD members told me me about the quality of enquiries being received. I also talked to visitors, who told me how useful it was to have all aspects of welding repre- sented in one zone.

Apprenticeship scheme helps fill the skills gap

Atlas Copco Compressors is training compressor engineers of the future and, in the process, helping to address the UK’s engi- neering skills gap through its comprehensive apprenticeship scheme. The scheme, which pro- vides apprentices with the practi- cal engineering skills and commercial experience required for a career in the compressed air sector, is also helping Atlas Copco to maintain a high stan- dards of compressor engineering excellence.

Donald Draffan, a first year apprentice based at Atlas Copco’s Cumbernauld Service Centre commented: “My training has already given me real hands-on experience with the latest com- pressor technology which is great, but it is also giving me an insight into the commercial side of the industry and how an organisation such as Atlas Copco operates. I really believe this combination will enable me to develop all of the necessary tech- nical and business skills and

expertise needed for a career as a compressor engineer.”

The apprenticeship scheme, which Atlas Copco operates in partnership with local colleges, provides apprentices with real- time experience and training within Atlas Copco’s engineering environment, based at any of its regional service centres or the Systems Engineering facilities located at the company’s UK headquarters in Hemel Hempstead.

This year is set to be a ground- breaking year for the Scarborough- based builder of tube bending machines, Unison. In the first quarter alone, the company has tripled the size of its order book

and the rate it is building machines compared to the same period last year.

Over 10 of the machines cur- rently on order are also destined for export, with some going to manufacturers in the company's traditional international markets of the USA, Western Europe and Scandinavia and the rest to manu- facturers in Latin America, Asia and Africa.

Last year was already a record year for Unison, with the company

building the highest quantity of machines it has ever made, increasing its headcount by almost 20 per cent, and leasing 8000ft2 of additional space next to its Scarborough factory which has been converted into a second machine building and testing area. The latest order surge is prompting Unison to expand again, and the company is recruit- ing new staff, and looking to invest in a new factory during 2013. www.unisonltd.com
