Queen’s Award for Enterprise 2012 (International Trade) Winner
purpose-designed BOP handling system comprising twin air-operated monorail hoists, with a joint lifting capacity of 200 tonnes has been supplied by J D Neuhaus. These hoists are a special compact design which has been developed to suit on-site operational requirements and each hoist represents a 45% reduction in the horizontal profile
length compared to the JDN standard EH-100 product. These compact hoists run in parallel on two overhead beams in excess of 22 metres in length. Both hoists incorporate two trolleys, each with a 50 tonne load rating, providing a total 100 tonne lift capacity per hoist. Each hoist is also fitted with a copper- coated bottom block and clevis (providing increased spark protection), together with a galvanised chain box. The overhead support beams incorporate a rack and pinion drive for the trolleys, ensuring that even inclines up to 2.5° can be negotiated. The total traverse distance is in excess of 18 metres, while the lift height available is 15.25 metres. A single Neuhaus LN trolley with a 50 tonne load capacity has also been incorporated which is used to provide a BOP fixture device during maintenance works. Both hoists incorporate overload protection, with limit switches also provided for the hoist and traverse operations. The hoist motors are also fitted with an additional ‘emergency’ manual brake release handle located on the motor cover. Hoist operation and traverse movements are achieved with a pendant controller having an 8 metre attachment hose and incorporating an additional interface for an extra local control box. A central control box with 23 metres of control line ensures that both hoists can be controlled from one location. The hoists are operated from a 6 bar air supply, with 2 main air supply chain systems provided to accommodate both the 22 metre support beam travel lengths plus the 18 metre hoist movements.

he Directors and staff of LMK Thermosafe Ltd are pleased to announce that the Company has won a prestigious Queen!s Award for Enterprise for International Trade 2012. Across the UK, this award has been won by 151 Companies, of which only 17 are in the East of England. The Company manufactures industrial drum and container heaters for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, and now exports the majority of production from its Haverhill headquarters to over 60 countries, with export earnings having increased by 85% over three years. The heaters are used in diverse manufacturing operations ranging from melting of ingredients for waxes, resins and paints, toothpastes, cosmetic gels and creams, automotive oil blending facilities and Middle Eastern desert crude oil extraction systems through to processing of honey, syrups and vegetable oils for cereal bars, yoghurts and sauces in the food industry. Managing Director Mark Newton comments: “This Award recognises many years of hard work by our talented and dedicated staff. Any export business is hard won, and our continuing growth in every continent is particularly due to the efficient and high quality technical support given to our overseas customers and marketing partners. In most countries there are strong local competitors, so although a small business, we succeed by offering a better total package of customer service, support and product availability. We have responded to international market needs and developed new products that meet the technical standards and certifications required for those markets. As an SME, it is particularly pleasing to have been contributing in a small way to the resurgence of UK manufacturing exports, and to be safeguarding employment for our staff even in tough economic times.”
T
Many of our customers are very large multi-national corporations requiring the highest standards of product quality and safety in manufacturing operations where there are significant risks due to the presence of explosive gases and dusts. Winning business in such environments is normally only achieved after on-site product tests and stringent evaluations against competing technologies.

n 21st April 2012, Romford-based Coborn Engineering, the world class designer and manufacturer of machines for the diamond tooling industry was announced as one of the winners of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category, in recognition of the continuing growth in world-wide sales of its semi-automatic and full CNC grinding machines for all super-hard materials, such as Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) and Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN). Employing 70 highly skilled staff, 10 of which are young adults progressing through its formal apprentice training programme, the company says the Award recognises its successful development and commercialisation strategies for both mature and emerging technology global markets. The Queen’s Awards are the UK’s most coveted commercial awards, with only a small percentage of those who enter each year measuring up to the demanding standards required to win an Award. Coborn Engineering is extremely proud of its exceptional achievement in receiving its Award, as the company’s Chairman, John Innocent, says: "It is a strong endorsement of the commitment and skills of our development teams in producing excellent products, and of our sales staff and international agents in promoting and selling them worldwide.” The Award has been granted in recognition of Coborn Engineering’s consistent growth of its international sales during the three years from 2009 to 2011, exporting exceptional British engineering knowledge across the globe. The company saw its export sales almost double between 2009 and 2010, and double again between 2010 and 2011 to nearly £7 million, an increase of 92 per cent over the period. Its main global markets are China at 54 per cent, Germany at 17 per cent, Taiwan at 9 per cent, USA and India at 6 per cent and 4 per cent respectively. Poland and Czech Republic are new markets that have been recently established.

Over the period covered by the Award, Coborn
Engineering has continued to invest around15 per cent of its turnover in product development to ensure the technology and machine capability matches or exceeds its customers’ expectations. This level of investment has been enhanced by an extensive restructuring of the company’s global service and support network. Following an initiative set up in 2008, Shanghai and Shenzhen in China have provided the most significantly successful areas. “We carefully selected our first potential customers to ensure they had the capability to fully exploit the advanced functionality of our machines allowing us to establish a user base that we could support. The customer has subsequently purchased an additional Coborn machine every year and attributes the growth of the business to the investment in our machines,” explains John Innocent. Sales in China have grown exponentially, with 15 machines sold in 2010 and 30 sold in 2011.
Key to this success has been establishing personal relationships and providing the technical support and after sales service required. China and Taiwan agent, Corremax, has increased from 10 to 25 staff due primarily to the increased business of Coborn Engineering in China.
