Products & applications Drives, controls & transmissions Drives boost sophisticated food separation technology
In the food industry soft separators are used to gently separate the solid and soft components of a wide range of basic prod- ucts. Robust, reliable drive technology components that are suitable for the requirements of the food industry are a key for a consistently high product quality. The BAADER group, a manufacturer of machinery and processing plant for the food industry, developed suitable technol- ogy for the clean separation of meat and sinews or cartilage more than 40 years ago. Over time, the product range was extended, and now includes soft separa- tors with varying performances that can be used to remove sinew from meat and poul- try, to recover meat from fish, to extract
pulp from fruit and vegetables, and to unpack food products. BAADER's soft sep- arators have been constantly optimised. In several models, helical bevel geared motors from NORD Drivesystems serve as drive units. One example is the BAADER 605 type, which reaches a maximum per- formance of approximately 3,000kg per hour depending on the hole size in the perforated drum, the feeding type, the product, the feeding temperature and the selected pressure – thereby qualifying for continuous large volume processing. Users can choose a hole diameter of 1.3mm, 2mm, 3mm, 5mm or 8mm in the perforated drum, with other diameters available on request.
BAADER uses NORD Drivesystems SK 9016.1, SK 9022.1 as well as SK 9042.1 gear unit types.
These drives owe their long life endurance partly to the UNICASE design of NORD's geared motors: the housing, which is made from a single-piece casting with integrated bearing seats, eliminates all sealing surfaces that could deflect under the effect of torque or radial forces. The high-efficiency gear units with durable, wear-free gear teeth also contribute to high reliability during operation. Nord Drives Systems T: 01235-534404

Motors ordered today, dispatched today
Electric motor manufacturer Regal Beloit has unveiled of its new group structure and product portfolio. Regal Beloit offers an enhanced premium range of Rotor brand motors and has now launched its Marathon motor range to the UK, a popular brand of electric motor.
“Our Regal Beloit and Marathon Electric brands are well known across America, while Rotor has a strong and loyal client base across the UK and Europe,” explains Lucie Hodkova, UK sales manager. Recent investment in the company’s Netherlands facility has seen Regal Beloit open the doors this year to one of the largest stock and motor modification facilities in Europe, providing direct support and availability to the UK market. From fractional kilowatt motors to Megawatt machines, they can all be ordered and despatched for delivery on the same day. Based in Wellingborough, Regal Beloit UK brings together the Marathon Electric, Leeson, and Rotor brands, pro- viding a range of single phase and three-phase motors including motors for unconventional or challenging environments such as ATEX explosion-proof motors, marine motors, and vibrator motors. The company also provides coolant pumps for machine tools, frequency inverters and worm gearboxes, as well as motor accessories, brakes, force ventilation units, encoders, and slide rails. WEG is providing the highest levels of energy efficiency and protection in haz- ardous environments, following the launch of the W22X range of flame- proof electric motors. ATEX/IECEx certified, the W22X motors are designed to cope with the rigours of aggressive and explosive atmospheres, while delivering the added benefits of high efficiency, (IE2/IE3 energy efficiency rating), minimised noise, vibration, and low operating temperature for increased reliability and safety. The introduction of the W22X series means that WEG now serves the global oil and gas industry and other hazardous area markets around the world with the widest range of energy saving motors. Vacon, specialist in AC variable speed drive technology, has enhanced its NXP range of pre- mium drives. Already known for their ability to operate reliably in demanding applications, the enhancements include the adop- tion of conformal coating for control boards, making the new drives even better able to withstand the effects of prolonged operation in tough environmental conditions. The NXP control board has also been redesigned, with criti- cal components upgraded to opti-
mise temperature stability, and with a new processor that offers a 15 per cent performance hike compared with its predecessor. Other enhancements include the use of varnished cards and option boards in all power mod- ules rated at 72A and above, and redesigned cooling channels to ensure optimal cooling and expe- rience-based optimisation of pro- tection limits. For air-cooled drives, a new fan assembly, which is 50 per cent more efficient than its predeces- sor, further improves the reliabil- ity of the drives and extends their operating life. Water-cooled drives are now optionally avail- able with an integrated brake chopper, which provides even more space savings when using these already compact units. Vacon

PMSM motors Gear drive specialist, Bauer Gear Motor’s new range of permanent mag- net synchronous motors (PMSM) is said to deliver high levels of energy saving and reduced costs for industry. The motors fulfil the requirements of the soon-to-be-implemented IE4 clas- sification and have the potential to achieve energy savings of up to 40 per cent compared with an IE2 inverter- driven squirrel cage motor. The PMSM series is an environmen- tally friendly range, employing an efficient design of rotor which offers a number of key benefits. It reduces heat losses from the rotor by 100 per cent, total losses by approximately 25 per cent, and increases total efficiency by 10 per cent or more. This improved performance translates into lower total
cost of ownership, a reduction in CO2 emissions, and ongoing savings that buffer against increasing energy costs. PMSM synchronous motors offer
improved efficiency when compared with induction motors even under par- tial load conditions; and high efficien- cy under rated operating conditions. They have higher power density, which, for geared motors, yields higher sys- tem efficiency with minimal installation volume – and also reduced weight. PMSM drives can produce higher torques for the same installation vol- ume as conventional induction motors. Bauer Gear Motor
