ABB makes major investment to support Imperial’s teaching facility
BB has invested close to £1 million and signed a 10-year agreement with Imperial College London to support a new carbon capture pilot plant teaching facility located at the university's central London campus. Further supplemented by a series of sponsorships for Imperial's chemical engineering undergraduates, ABB's investment and involvement in the project signals the company's commitment to shaping the next generation of industrial engineers. Using a combination of ABB's instrumentation, drives, motors and process automation equipment, the control room provides students with hands-on experience of pilot-scale industrial plant operations and is the only facility of its kind in an academic institution in the world. The pilot plant will be used in undergraduate teaching with the aim of equipping students with the practical skills needed for a career in industry. The agreement between ABB and Imperial gives the university access to the most advanced control and instrumentation technology available from any supplier, as well as life cycle services and support for the installation.

The torque flange includes an integrated magnetic speed measurement system generating 1,024 pulses per revolution to enable very accurate speed measurements even at low speeds. The magnetic system is insensitive to contamination, such as dust or oil mist, that may be present in test bench environments or on industrial applications.
External interferences that might contaminate measurements are effectively excluded because the measurement value data transmission from the rotor to stator is digital. The T40FM is available with nominal torque ranges between 15 kN and 80 kN while care has been taken to ensure the design has a flat profile to facilitate integration into any industrial application. The rugged torque flange has a wide range of applications including, for example, test benches for motors or gears.

event, Sensing Technology 2012 takes place on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th September and for 2012 is co- located with six other exhibitions making this the biggest industrial event of the year. For those looking for new products or simply the latest information, with the enhanced Sensing Technology 2012 exhibition everything needed will literally be under one roof – from sensors, test and measurement equipment, and other types of instrumentation; to interesting seminars and knowledgeable professionals. The Sensing Technology exhibition is now in it’s third year, and each has evolved to meet the demands of both exhibitors and visitors. The event was created as an exhibition with seminar programme in 2010 simply because there wasn’t an event like it in the UK. Those sourcing sensor products in the UK had nowhere to go to see the newest products, or to find out about the latest sensor technologies. Sensing Technology was therefore launched as “The UK’s only national event dedicated to sensors and sensing technology”.
