are beginning to realise that the game may be a profitable one due to the increase in profile. O’Shea certainly agrees with this assessment and believes the sports retail trade can assist in helping grow the game. “There is no doubt Hearn has done a

tremendous job in transforming the game into an attractive sport for the general public. Darts is now the third largest participation sport in the UK and with the huge crowds that now visit events such as the World Championships and the Premier League Darts, retailers definitely have the potential to boost profits by selling darts products which also have the added advantage of being fairly affordable for customers. Players are also constantly tinkering with their darts which means there is the opportunity to sell accessories and replacement parts which will ensure customers keep returning to shops.” However, he believes there is room for improvement in the sell through of products

to consumers that may help boost profits further. “In whatever field you are in, a little bit of

knowledge goes a long way. Whether you are a green grocer or a sports retailer, knowing your product is crucial. Customers are more likely to return to the shop if staff know what they are talking about or at the very least appear to know they are knowledgeable.” There is still perhaps time for O’Shea to

complete his dream of winning the World title after a return to form in the 2012 tournament where he lost to Christian Kist. Despite turning 50 last year, he feels the ‘Embassy’ title is still within his grasp. “I feel I am playing as well now as I ever

have done and even though I have just turned 50, I firmly believe there is still time for me to win a world title.”
