In addition to correcting the body height in relation to the trucks, new details like the Farr Air grilles, horns, cab vent, windshield wipers and running board along the sides of the nose set this handsome EMD E8 model apart from its out of the box appearance. These details are visible in this photograph of Illinois Central E8 No. 4038 (below).

While making sure everything moves smoothly with- out binding, I add a drop or two of oil on each post as the gear is seated. I reapply the bottom gear covers and give the truck a test on a flat surface. Without pushing down, you should be able to push the truck with one finger from the end and it should roll freely. The worm gear gets the same clean-
ing, and I make sure there are thrust washers between the worm gear and the bearing. It sounds like a small thing, but some of the noise or vibra- tion that you hear when running can come from not having this washer in place. I have often found one or both

missing, even on a new unit. With a touch of oil added to both ends of the armature I’m ready to wire the unit back together and install a decoder. The B-unit chassis was milled in the same manner as the A-unit to lower it, then I modified its coupler pockets as well. They also have the steam lines. The trucks were disassembled, cleaned and lubricated as above.
