What’s the difference between a


Dafat and a Dakto? Or either of these and a Dmxil? How about a Retumbo? (Actually, you might have one of these around the house.) No, they are not something out of Tolkien, a possibility raised by critter- builder and small steam fan Phil Gliebe in a recent e-mail exchange we had on this topic. They are code names for locomotives and parts in the Daven- port Locomotive Works catalog, circa 1927. The first two are both nice-look- ing 0-4-0’s of around 13 tons in working order, Dafat having a saddle tank and Dakto, side tanks. The difference be- tween them and a Dmxil is two more driver axles, a pilot truck, tender and 57 tons. It is a modest 2-8-0 that would look good on any shortline.
