and what railroads received each mod- el. Santa Fe Junctions, Engineering Se- ries Vol. six, by Robert D. Walz, is an 80-page black and white softcover book featuring drawings, images and refer- ence material on a variety of Santa Fe junctions where mainline and branch- line tracks came together. The Southern Pacific Historical & Technical Society, 1523 Howard Access Rd. Unit A, Upland, CA 91786 (www. sphts.org), has published Southern Pa- cific’s Golden Empire 1954-1958 The color photography of John B. Hunger- ford & Harold F. Stewart. This 296- page, 8³⁄₄″×11¹⁄₄″ book features 495 col- or photographs, most never-before- published, of the Southern Pacific in and around California, as well as some of the railroads that interchanged with the SP. It has a list price of $85.00.

Book reviews New York Subways & Stations 1970-1990 by Tod Lange, published by Schiffer Pub-

lishing, Ltd., 4880 Lower Valley Rd., Atglen, PA 19310. (www. schiffer- books.com) Hardcover, 208 11″×8¹⁄₂″ pages; $39.99. As a daily commuter on New York

City’s subway system in 2012, you come to take certain things for granted: the cars are (for the most part) clean and graffiti-free, the stations are safe, and the service is reliable. New York Subways & Stations 1970-1990 re- minds you that this was not always the case. While author Tod Lange tends to romanticize this era of “burnt out buildings” and its “subway system from the apocalypse” as “remarkable” and “colorful,” his nostalgia and genuine af- fection for the city he called home cuts through the grime and filth to add a real sense of heart to these photos. Comprised almost exclusively of im- ages, the book is divided into eight

chapters. The first two, “The Seventies” and “The Eighties,” make up more than half of the volume and are mostly de- voted to the elevated lines of Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. The book is at its best and most immersive when it takes advantage of its horizontal lay- out, stretching panoramic shots across two full pages to reveal a cityscape both familiar and foreign. The subsequent sections are briefer

but still compelling. “Subway Yards” shows some of the most decrepit equip- ment the system had to offer and high- lights the wide-open, industrial land- scapes of the outer-boroughs not often associated with New York City. “The Underground” is unfortunately so short as to feel like an afterthought, which is a shame considering the heightened drama of these ominous photos of sub- terranean Manhattan, which will no doubt leave you checking over your shoulder every few minutes for mug- gers and thugs. “The Graffiti Cars” lives up to its ti-

tle, featuring trains that have had nearly every square inch of surface area covered in spray paint (a phenom- enon that has long since been eclipsed by the era of a graffiti-resistant coating on subway cars). “Work Equipment” showcases some of the unusual rolling stock that kept the lines in service, and “Scrap Trains” is a post-mortem look at the subways, remarkable mostly for how little difference is discernible be- tween trains deemed scrap and those still in daily service at the time. While the book contains only a few

pages of text, or perhaps because of this reason, the repeated typos are a dis- traction and leave you wishing as much care had been devoted to the writing as to the photography selection. Such drawbacks aside, New York Subways & Stations 1970-1990 is an engaging time capsule from a unique time in the city’s history forever lost to the sands of time and gentrification. Modelers with an interest in late twentieth century urban scenes should be able to find
