RECRUITER HOT SEAT We ask Eutechnyx’s Erin Turnbull what she expects from aspiring developers and the dos and don’ts of interviewee etiquette

What separates Eutechnyx from other games developers? We are in charge of our own destiny – we create original IPs that we own as well as having strong, strategic relationships with some of the world’s leading brands, such as NASCAR, and the world’s top car manufacturers. Eutechnyx celebrates its 25th

birthday this year, so as well as stability we’ve proven that we are experts at rapidly adapting to changes in the volatile games industry. The launch of Auto Club Revolution

in 2012, our freemium online game, has also allowed us to venture into online publishing alongside our console development activities.

What perks and benefits are available to employees working at the studio? First-class training and career progression in a high achiever atmosphere – it’s not for everyone, but if you think you are good there is no better place to get rewarded for your talents. Working with the hardware manufacturers on all of their latest toys; great locations – the hugely underestimated North East of England, and the über-cool Shoreditch in London.

Plus all of the usual stuff you would expect from an Investor in

People employer, such as competitive salaries, a company car scheme, management training, worldwide travel, flexi-time, private healthcare, relocation packages, staff parties and so on.

What should aspiring developers do with their CV to get an interview? Prove that you are willing to go above and beyond what is expected. A demo that you have tested on

several machines or a showreel of your work is essential – a CV just doesn’t cut it anymore. Be prepared to highlight and showcase key experience and passion for your chosen field. A YouTube upload of your work is

also a great tool to make sure your skills can be seen by everyone in a matter of minutes. Send your CV directly to Eutechnyx

– direct CVs always get priority and get you a better salary deal as agents don’t take a share of your cash.

Who is the best interviewee you’ve ever had and why? Someone with a brilliant CV and demo came in and said to Brian Jobling: “My proposal is that I’ll join Eutechnyx for no salary, on the condition that I only work for you – the CEO. You can then pay me based on what I achieve for your company”. It was a strong pitch by someone

who realised they had a lot to offer. Needless to say they came on board and have developed their career with us and become one of the CEO’s most trusted development managers.

So who was the worst? Be sure to switch off your mobile phone. One candidate had a full on conversation with his wife regarding their shopping plans whilst in an interview with both our CEO and COO. He didn’t get the job.

THIS MONTH: NETWORK SYNCHRONISATION

ENGINEER “Network synchronisation is such a fundamental aspect of games at Rare that we typically look for people with experience. “If you haven’t got a shipped a title yet, capture attention by providing a simple, one-click demo that demonstrates all aspects of a networked game. “Once invited to interview, come prepared: you may be asked about completely different networking models, so study other games to rule out any chance of being caught on the back foot. “Crucially, make sure you’ve warmed up your C++ skills. At Rare, you will often receive homework before the interview and then be asked to code with the interviewers once there.” Bjorn Toft Madsen,
