what a great scene could be created by trying to duplicate the unloading of cir- cus elephants in Manchester, N.H., in June of 1953. Preston specifies that each animal stamped its foot on the un- loading ramp to check on its solidity be- fore descending to the ground. There are a large number of photos of the clas- sic B-15 2-6-0’s that the B&M employed in nearly all types of service. I once owned a brass model by Overland of one of these Moguls and would dearly love to see it duplicated with today’s su- per steam modeling technology. The B&M used 0-6-0 switchers extensively in branchline freight activities and many views of this action are pictured as well. For the diesel fan, in addition to the aforementioned EMD freight en- gines, there a numerous views of E7 passenger units and a number of im- ages of early EMD, Alco and GE switch- ers. There are also many photos of work equipment like wreckers, plows and the like, and there are several shots of the Boston & Maine’s gas electric “doo- dlebugs,” models of which have been marketed by Walthers and Bachmann. Regular passenger equipment is well covered, too.

For the craftsmen interested in structure building, there are many views of stations, signal towers and wa- ter tanks that provide the B&M fan much grist for modeling. There is a nice photo on page 95 of the enginehouse in Biddeford, Maine, a classic single stall facility and one that I photographed in the 1970’s after it was closed. The color photos give a good reading on the paint schemes used by the B&M on their line side structures during this time. The book concludes with an interest- ing aside describing Preston’s recording of a 33¹₃ rpm record album of B&M steam locomotive sounds. This disc, en- titled Vanishing Vapors on the Boston & Maine, is in my record cabinet today and still provides a rich memory of steam on a classic railroad. This work provides an intimate look at a timeless New Eng- land railroad. Even though the Boston & Maine has vanished into the Pan Am Railway’s grasp, George Melvin has pre- served an ample recollection of the line through the efforts of Preston Johnson, a proud and long serving employee. The multitude of photos create a vivid visual record, and the exceptionally detailed captions leave no doubt about the B&M’s importance to its home region and the way it did its job. I heartily rec- ommend this book for both the railroad modelers and the historians among us.–BOB BENNETT
