Starting with a description of Preston’s early life in and around Lawrence, Massachusetts, the volume progresses to a tour of Boston’s passen- ger and freight facilities and thence to trips on the various lines radiating out from the B&M’s “hub.” A color coded map on page 2 makes it easy to follow the different excursions and provides a good sense of location. Most of the pho- tos are black and white reproductions. However, there are enough color shots, some of which are just a bit dark, to give a good sense of the vibrant New England landscape and the steam and diesel powered trains moving through it. I especially liked color images like the ones on pages 47-49 which give a good idea of the colors of transition-era autos that are visible in their railroad oriented environment. The captions for nearly every photo contain detailed data about the trains, service, motive power and industries and towns that are portrayed. And this brings me to the model railroading implications of the book. As a modeler, when I peruse a book
