Boston and Maine Mem- ories Feat- uring the Pho- tography and Career of Preston John- son, by George and Katherine
Melvin, published by Melvin Photos, 392 Sturtevant Hill Rd., Readfield, ME 05355;
www.melvinphotos.com. Hard- cover, 112 8¹₂″×11″ pages (ISBN: 978- 0-9823684-1-1); $49.95. For afficionados of New England rail-
roads, the name George Melvin should be easily recognizable. I have a number of books that he has written and/or co- authored dating back to New England Diesels from 1975. He has also produced a three part series on the Maine Central and a nice work on the Grand Trunk in New England. His latest volume on the northern roads is this book on the Boston & Maine utilizing the experi- ences and images of Preston Johnson. The B&M was an interesting line. By
the standards of many North American railroads, its main lines were extremely short. None of it primary routes were much longer than 150 miles and, indeed, much of its trackage was truly branch- line running. And, it was these branches with their quaint structures, diminutive
motive power, light loads and short trains, that provided the road with much of its charm and made it attractive to railfans and photographers. The rail- road was also noted for the dedication and longevity of its employees, and Pre- ston Johnson certainly fills that bill. Johnson, still active at this writing at
the age of 87, began his career with the B&M as a towerman in 1939, establish- ing his seniority on Christmas day of that year. His tenure with the road lasted 45 years and during those decades, his position with the railroad permitted unique access to the line and all that it had to offer. He secured ad- mittance to facilities, grabbed cab rides and generally was able to witness and participate in all that the Boston & Maine had to offer from the heyday of steam, through the transition to diesel power and into the modern era. In my career as a history teacher spanning nearly 40 years, I’ve always felt that it is crucial to know and be able to convey the stories behind the historical events and figures to help make those facts more meaningful for my students. The extensive text in this book allows Pre- ston to share the stories and knowledge that he accumulated during that long career. To paraphrase George Melvin when I interviewed him for this review, Preston Johnson is amazing in the amount of information and insight that
