Skipper

The Skipper, in its bare bones state ready for covering (above left), is simple and light. Tom built the Skipper(above right) much like the original,

The model can be built without any alter-

ations in airframe except the addition of an elevator (mine has a 7⁄8-inch chord) and a slight change in the firewall, which only needs a small hole for the ESC. But I chose to make several changes

worth noting. I had a laser-cut wing kit on hand that was almost exactly the same span and chord as the wing on the plans, so I saved a little parts cutting time. I changed the rudder shape slightly. Since my motor is so small I made the firewall, and thus the nose slightly narrower and added “cowl cheeks” for a less boxy look.

using the original plans (CF916). It has now been updated with smaller micro electronics, a brushless motor and a Li-Po battery.

Simply build the model as shown on the

plans including landing gear and tail skid, but do not sheet the fuselage top from the trailing edge to just in front of the rudder to provide access to the pushrods during setup. Cover the wing and stab with Solite, available from Stevens Aero www.stevensaero.com, and spray two coats of clear lacquer on the fuselage and rudder. Glue the stab and fin in place on fuselage. Hinge the rudder and ele- vator with standard glossy Scotch tape. To make a window painting stencil, glue a photocopy of the fuselage side to cereal box cardboard, and, with a sharp hobby knife,

cut out the windows and cut holes for the dowels. Hold the stencil on the side of the fuselage aligned by the wing dowels and draw the window outline on the fuselage with a black fine point Sharpie marker, gen- tly, so you don’t score the soft balsa. The stencil will ensure that the windows will be identical on both sides. Then simply fill in the window with black craft paint and an artist’s brush. Once the airframe is completed to this

stage it is easy to trial fit the R/C compo- nents. First prepare the power system. Place the motor, prop, ESC and battery in
