The engine began as a series of plastic tubes (above left) with balsa heads into which was let a tube for the coolant passage way. The carburetor manifold (above center) was heat formed over a plywood form and laser cut ring nuts were added before assembly. Here the valve train has been added (above

right)—more plastic tube with balsa rocker boxes. The exhaust manifold (below left) was also formed over a plywood die and assembled on a jig. The assembled Mercedes D.III engine (below center) and installed (below right). Epoxy was used for the exhaust manifold “welds”.

Both machine guns are similarly constructed (above left and right) with a ply core, plastic facing and details and a heavy paper perforated heat shield. A jig was used to assemble the grenades (below left) which are plastic tube covered by a vacuformed waffle texture skin, aluminum tube and

1⁄64-inch ply fins. The instruments (below right) are engraved plastic sheet in an engraved ply panel. The white plastic faces were painted flat black and then sanded to leave the lettering in black. The main switch has “BOSCH” engraved on it.
