Upper lozenge pattern

Lower lozenge pattern

ILLUSTRATIONS: COURTESY MODEL AVIATION

One of the best reference sources for the German WWI lozenge pattern was the Bill Boss C/L Scale column in the January 1985 Model Aviation. Rob used

the two graphics from that column, shown above to create the painting masks he describes in this article.

Procedure Followed: I had an out of print copy of Federal Standard (FS) 595a paint chips, the relevant chips of which I referred to for this document to make reference and color matching easier. Note that the FS fan deck is still available and contains additional colors. Some of the Model Master (MM) paints reference FS numbers. For those FS numbers for which MM paint was not available, I mixed colors to get close to the FS chip. The Methuen and Munsell references are from plastic modeler internet sources.

Notes: a) No MM color exists for FS 37142. Mix (2) parts MM 2013 Violet with (1) part MM 2009 British Crimson.

b) The MM 2765 Turquoise is way too blue when compared to the FS 35299 paint chip. The Turquoise used is very close to MM 2087 RLM Hellblau 78 which contains a lot of green. MM 2135 Russian Interior Blue/Green appears to be an even closer match. Start with (4) parts MM 2765 Turquiose and mix in increments of (3) parts MM 2087 RLM Hellblau 78 and (1) part MM 1713 Med Green.

c) No single color chip exists here since the final color is a mixture of two color chips FS 36231 and FS 37142. See also (a).

d) No single color chip exists here since the final color is a mixture of two color chips FS 36081 and FS 37144. See also (e).

e) No MM color exists for FS 37144. Mix (2) parts MM 2013 Violet with (2) parts MM 2009 British Crimson.
