RISEN 2: Dark Waters is taking the franchise in a pirate-themed direction that swaps cries of yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum for glimpses into the darker side of the human soul. Hoping to emulate their last successful title, Deep Silver are taking players on an adventure set in a ruthless world where corruption is the norm and greed, betrayal, obsession and self-interest constitute a moral compass. Gamers will step into the booze-

soaked shoes of the nameless protagonist from the first title who, without Titans to battle, now spends his days fuelling an alcohol problem. When sea creatures begin destroying shipping lanes and rumours spread that only the pirates know how to deal with them, our hero must ditch the rum, learn the ways of the buccaneer and get back to monster slaying.

A PIRATE’S TALE Fans of Risencan look forward to tying up some loose ends from the first game in a plot that also sees the mysterious protagonist swap his bows and arrows for pistols and shotguns in a fight across several exotic islands.

34 July 20th 2011 One key gameplay enhancement

in Dark Waterscomes in the form of the new Dirty Tricks skill. When in use, players control pet monkeys in a bid to ransack ancient ruins, use voodoo powers to turn opponents against each other as well as take out enemies via trained parrots that have swapped the comfort of a shoulder for the perils of battle. When not engaging in intense combat or digging for information in adventurous side quests, players can take a break from buckling swash by taking part in a series of fun mini-games spread around the tropical archipelago. These include target practice, sword fights

and a drinking contest that gets increasingly difficult as the booze takes effect.

Senior brand manager at Deep

Silver, Daniel Oberlerchner told MCV, “Although Risen 2features fluid animations, advanced lighting, particle effects, 3D soundscapes and very cool water shaders with real time caustics and refractions and all those bells and whistles, it’s the living and breathing world that is the star.

“In the end, it’s not about the brush that paints the picture, but the artist.”

Risen 2: Dark Waterslook set to satisfy both fans of the first title

Risen’s living and breathing world is the real star.

and those new to the series in the latest swashbuckling chapter that promises a range of new islands to explore, rum to drink and huge Krakens to slay.

It’s about time console gamers get to join in on the fun.
