Travelling for a sense of well-being is not a new trend within the luxury travel industry. But how and what one can do to achieve this has become more sophisticated and inventive. In this issue, we reveal how travellers’ demands for real ‘immersion’ within a destination has led to a fascinating selection of challenging activities, inspiring experiences, indulgent relaxation and unique health programmes.
In Thailand, the famed Chiva-Som, revitalise their stressed and exhausted guests with a range of treatments, complementary therapies and fitness programmes in a genuinely personal 5* experience. In Italy, Tombolo Talasso introduces guests to their Thalassotherapy Centre. However, according to ILTM Asia VIP Buyer Eriko Seo, ‘though Japanese travellers are used to travelling for health within their own country, many still think foreign spas are for women to get facial treatments’. It seems luxury suppliers must work on developing specific programmes to attract these travellers.
For many, immersion is about exploring and getting involved. Los Cauquenes, located at the ‘end of the world’ in Ushuaia, Argentina provides a rustic home from which to hike, sail, kayak, ski and scuba dive your way through the stunning Andes Mountains and the surrounding area. On the other side of the world, Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa in Australia allows the botanists, bird watchers and naturalists among us to explore the rugged Australian bush. Finally, for the true thrill seekers, a visit to the mysterious North Pole with Poseidon Arctic Voyages is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
