If there was ever a country made for that intoxicating combination of active fun and
soulful resting, it would be Australia.
Pure escapism H
amilton Island, located in the middle of Queensland’s Whitsunday Islands and at the edge of the Great Barrier Reef, offers both luxuries across its range of bungalows, holiday homes, villas, beach clubs and
hotels. Regardless of where you decide to position yourself on this tropical island (on the same latitude as Mauritius and Honolulu, it has a year-round tropical climate), indulgence and adventure are never far away.
Hamilton Island is the gateway to the famed Great Barrier Reef and its fascinating underwater life. Scuba-dive or enjoy a front-seat view of the marine life and corals in an underwater viewing chamber. Over 70% of the island has been preserved so exploring and adventure are still possible on numerous unspoilt nature trails. The Island’s very own wildlife park introduces travellers to local koalas, kangaroos, birds and even the resident crocodile. Golf aficionados will relish a challenge in the 18- hole, par 71 championship course measuring 6120 metres and designed by five-time British Open winner Peter Thomson.
If all of this talk of ‘active’ travel and ‘immersion’ makes ‘fly & flop’ enthusiasts feel ashamed of their yearning for doing nothing, then fear not. As the pure white sand of Whitehaven Beach and the numerous relaxing spa offerings attest, doing nothing is far from frowned upon at Hamilton Island.
