“First, the sweepstakes provided the op- portunity for us (as a wholesale power pro- vider) to work with our distribution co-ops to look for energy-effi cient type packages to tie back to the Touchstone Energy brand,” Faulkenberry said. “Also, as we look into the future, ground source heat pumps of- fer a way to offset future capacity expansion at WFEC due to the high effi ciency of these units.”


Max Ott, manager of AEC, also reiterated that the Climate Connections Sweepstakes provided a great opportunity for others to not only learn more about GSHP benefi ts, but also about the incentives.


Paul Bony, director of residential market development for ClimateMaster, explained that they have a very strong policy of work- ing with electric cooperatives across the country.


“We are very fortunate to have partnered


with WFEC on the sweepstakes,” Bony pointed out.


Once the Prewetts initially contacted AEC Services (a subsidiary of Alfalfa Electric Co- operative) about installing a ground source system in their home, Terry Ryel, director of marketing and key accounts/technical ser- vices at AEC, and Larry Miller, AEC Services mechanical contractor, met with them to discuss available options. At that point, the Prewetts opted to make the investment decision of installing a ground source heat pump following the completion of the effi ciency review. With their central heating and air condi- tioning system being over 30 years old and worn out, the Prewetts felt like an invest- ment needed to be made in a new system. They had the unit installed in December and since that time it has been working out very well for them.


“We will know more about the savings once we have been through the summer months,” Mr. Prewett commented. For AEC, as well as other participating co- operatives across the state, the sweepstakes allowed a unique opportunity to spread the word that ground source is the most effi -


cient way to heat or cool a home. Ryel said that the greatest benefit of a ground source unit is that it is about 300 percent more effi cient than other units. “The hot water regeneration alone allows for about 90 percent of your hot water to be free,” Ryel explained. “Ground source units are the most en- ergy- effi cient heating and cooling units on the market. The initial cost is higher, but the benefi ts last for years,” Ott pointed out. AEC tries to offset the initial costs through rebates.


“GSHPs also lower the overall demand for AEC, which has a positive impact on overall cost. Plus, it’s a good way for people to save money and energy. It’s a win-win situation for all involved,” Ott commented. Faulkenberry explained that WFEC’s marketing department has learned a great deal from their cooperative members over the past two years of offering an Energy Ef- fi cient Rebate Program.


“We are seeing trends from our coopera- tives and we feel that we are by far offering each cooperative’s members the best op- tions possible for the most energy-effi cient units,” Faulkenberry pointed out. Bony, who has been involved with the GSHP industry for about 20 years, noted that the effi ciencies of the equipment have continued to get better and better. Heat pumps offer the lowest annual operating cost of any of those available on the market. “You save money year after year,” he com- mented. Plus, there is a 30 percent tax credit for residential installs. A primary incremental cost between ground source and air source is in the loop, as the gap is closing on overall costs of the units themselves. The fundamental difference between ground source and standard air condition- ing is cooling from the outside tempera- tures.

“If it is 105 degrees outside, a standard unit is trying to take the cool out of the 105 degree air to cool your home. A ground source heat pump, which is coupled to the earth, doesn’t have to work as hard since it is tapped into that steady earth temperature. It’s incredibly effi cient,” Bony pointed out. As for the Prewetts, it has been an exciting opportunity. “We never dreamed we would win. All we have ever won in our lives is maybe a door prize at an AEC An- nual Meeting. But, noth- ing like this,” the couple laughingly admitted. “We appreciate what you guys did here today in making this possible for us,” the Prewetts con- cluded. OL
