VOLUNTEERS A GLASGOW YOUTH HOSTEL - JOHANNA

t the end of August 2011 I came from Sattenhausen/Germany to Scotland to volunteer for the

Scottish Youth Hostel Association. With other German girls, I headed to the Stirling Youth Hostel to start our induction week. After the week, I moved to Glasgow Youth Hostel where I received a warm welcome. My work includes cleaning, laundry,

housekeeping, catering duties, reception duties and general customer service. Being at the reception is definitely my

favourite part of my work. I enjoy being in contact with customers from all over the world and it improves my English a lot. In July and August, I´m staying at

Edinburgh Metro Youth Hostel. Scotland is a beautiful country, and I am looking forward to seeing more of it!

CAIRNGORM LODGE YOUTH HOSTEL – UMA

May 2011, but didn’t want to start university right away. I wanted to see more of the world and, above all, improve my English. I decided that I would go abroad at least for a year. I was really surprised to see the self-

catering facilities in the Youth Hostels and I think it’s a very good thing to have (we don’t have it in Germany). Another thing that amazed me was that the SYHA makes Scotland accessible for everyone. Many Youth Hostels are in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by a beautiful landscape. You can almost imagine sometimes that nature is untouched by man and you are the first human to see it.

Te work in the Youth Hostels varies from

Youth Hostel to Youth Hostel, as each have their own ways to do the rooms and clean the building. In some Youth Hostels, where there is a restaurant, you also work in the kitchen. I’m really happy working here, because the other staff members are very nice (which they are, in fact, in every Youth Hostel I’ve been up to now) and the guests also love it here, which makes you happy, and proud to work in such a nice Youth Hostel. You meet a lot of interesting people in the Youth Hostels. In March, I worked in Torridon and I’ll be

working in Cairngorm Lodge for almost the rest of my stay. I’m really looking forward to the months ahead and I’ll be travelling a lot through Scotland.
