Advance single train fare with railcard, Corrour to Ardrossan (Ayrshire) via Glasgow, 125 miles – £10.05. It pays to do the homework, as the same train and same type of ticket from Corrour, just as far as Glasgow, is £13.25! At Ardrossan, I took the 3pm sailing


to Brodick, though not before I had stocked up at a new supermarket close by the ferry, as shops on Arran are sparse, and the connecting bus to Lochranza Youth Hostel (£2.80) does not leave much time for shopping in Brodick. Calmac Ferries offer few discounts, but foot passengers travel far more cheaply than those with a car. I bought a Hopscotch No. 16 ticket, which for £26.50 allowed single journeys Ardrossan-Brodick and Lochranza-Claonaig (Kintyre), and return trips Kennacraig (Kintyre)-

a car would have added £142.50, and the bus system on Arran is so well-planned that public transport has the distinct


advantage. My two nights at Lochranza were a delight. Te bus routes are North Coast, South Coast, and the ‘String Road’ across the middle, and all services connect at Brodick or Blackwaterfoot. Tere is an excellent all-day rover ticket for only £4.95, though Scottish over-60s would travel free.

would be an expensive highlight. Loch Ossian Youth Hostel is a very special and remote place and Jan Robinson, the manager, was the perfect host, who loved nothing better than to chat through the evening with the guests while coping with the curious workings of the hot water system. Two hostellers had brought their bikes, for free, on the train up from Glasgow, though this facility has to be booked as there’s room for only six bikes.
