safe and enjoyable practice in mountaineering by operating subsidised training and is run by the sisters of Jonathan Conville, who sadly died on the Matterhorn in 1979.


AFFILIATENEWS


Tere are two types of


courses run by the trust - Alpine and Scottish Winter. Te Scottish Winter courses


are based at Ardenbeg Bunkhouse in the Cairngorms in January and bridge the gap between summer climbing/ walking and winter mountaineering. Te ratio is one instructor


to six participants and two days in duration. Te courses cover the use of ice axe and crampons, navigation, basic rope work including snow belays (anchors), avalanche assessment and problem avoidance.

Hostelling International is the only global network of hostel associations, with more than 4,000 youth hostels in more than 80 countries worldwide. Te awards celebrate the very best across the Hostelling International network according to their customers. Lerwick Islesburgh Youth Hostel ranked the highest in

terms of overall customer rating in the following categories: Friendliest Hostel, Most Efficient, Most Comfortable, Best Overall Hostel and Best Hostel Country. Keith Legge, Chief Executive
