James L Taylor (former Vice President) OBITUARY

In November 2011, SYHA Hostelling Scotland was sad to hear of the death of Honorary Vice President Jim Taylor, at the age of 95. Jim came from the era when people went straight from the Glasgow shipyards to make the most of a weekend in the Youth Hostels. He was a man of great vitality, who worked his way up in his own professional life and who put his skills fully into the service of SYHA, and with them his passion for life. Jim was known

throughout the Association and beyond, as he was a regular attender at the twice-yearly conferences of what we now know as Hostelling International. He first joined the old National

Executive in around the late 1940s and he and his wife Cathie then contributed for many years. Tey were stalwarts of the work parties of that era, and then graduated to committee work - Cathie was particularly concerned with supplies and standards and with the Youth

Hostels in the north, and Jim with the structure and design of the buildings; he was convenor of the buildings committee for many, many years. Jim was elected Vice Chairman in 1980 and continued in that office till 1987, when he left the National Executive and was elected an Honorary Vice President of the Association in recognition of all that he had contributed over his 50 years of service.

He will be much missed.
