Security on a Budget

Low-cost ways to deter, detect and defeat fraud by Maureen Blaney Flietner

“Don’t be naïve.” “Recognize that some people can lie to your face.” “Watch those you trust as much or more than those you don’t.”

T Trends magazine, April 2012

hat advice from respondents to the AAHA’s sur- vey on embezzlement and theft could leave you wondering just how you can protect your business. Money, drugs, supplies, credit card numbers and even services were reported stolen using often sur-

prisingly well-concealed and devious methods. What seemed an even bigger blow to some is that the per-

petrators were often trusted members of the clinic. Front-office staff, veterinary assistants and even veterinary associates were among the culprits. Veterinary clinics are not alone. Small businesses tend to

suffer disproportionately high fraud losses, according to the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE, acfe.com), the world’s largest antifraud organization and provider of antifraud training and education. Why? Small businesses tend to have far fewer antifraud con-

trols than larger organizations. Fortunately, several no-cost and low-cost security measures

are available.
