eterinarians in Durango, Colo., are reporting an increase in dogs poisoned by marijuana since the

state has legalized medical marijuana. “We used to see maybe one case a

year. Now we’re seeing a couple a month,” Stacee Santi, DVM, at Riverview Animal Hospital, told the Durango Herald. “Dogs love the stuff,” Jennifer

Schoedler, DVM, at the Alpine Animal Hospital added. “I’ve seen them eat the buds, plants, joints and marijuana in food.” Tina Wismer, DVM, DABVT, DABT and medical director at the Animal Poison

Stoned dogs a growing problem

Control Center for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, says the general trend has been toward more severe toxicities from higher-grade marijuana. “We do get brownie and cookie

cases, but most are dogs eating the actual plant material, the baggie, roach and so on,” Wismer says. “Some callers are very upfront about it, especially in states where medical marijuana is legal. Others are more difficult.” Durango, a tourist town nestled in

the mountains of southwest Colorado, has a population of 17,000.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH “The appointment book is dead. The business sector as a whole has seen a shift

to automation. The success of sites like Schedulicity, OpenTable and ZocDoc only reinforce the idea that the traditional pen and paper appointment book may see its demise in 2012. The number of online appointments is growing exponentially, as Schedulicity alone has seen nearly seven million appointments booked online since mid-2009. Over the next two to five years, the physical appointment book will be gone all together and replaced with online counterparts.” —Jerry Nettuno, founder and CEO of Schedulicity
