Products Seals & bearings Self-aligning roller bearing range upgraded for even longer life

SKF has upgraded, and expanded, its SKF Explorer self-aligning roller bearing range, thanks to an new method of processing bearing steel that offers an enhanced level of per- formance and longer life, even in applications where there are high levels of conta- mination. All SKF spherical roller bearings, CARB toroidal roller bearings and most spherical roller thrust bearings now carry the industry-leading SKF Explorer performance class designation. The enhanced strength of SKF Explorer has been achieved via a new heat

treatment process for the hardening of bearing steel, which includes a lower temperature processing stage that enhances material properties yet further without necessitating a commercially unviable process time. The SKF next-generation bearing steel has a much finer microstructure than the tradi- tional material, offering exceptional dimensional stability and structural strength even where there are high levels of contamination or where there is insufficient lubrication. The new SKF Explorer bearings are said to deliver smoother, lower tempera-

ture operation under the most demanding conditions and are available in a full range of sizes and specifications, making them suitable for applications in mining and quarrying,

materials handling, marine, offshore and manufacturing. The greater load carrying capacity of SKF Explorer offers customers the option to use smaller bearings in some applications and potentially cut costs. “Extending the range of SKF Explorer self-aligning roller bear- ings means that more customers can improve reliability and increase uptime for their particular application,” says Johan Ander, product manager at SKF. The performance and reliability of the new bearings has been enhanced still

further through a careful redesign of the rolling elements, cages and guide rings. Floating guide rings ensure that rolling elements are correctly aligned, with high load bearing strength, minimal friction and low temperature, while internal geometries and surface finishes are optimised to eliminate stress on moving parts and ensure efficient oil film build-up with long lubricant life. The SKF Explorer performance class has been certified by classification socieites Det Norske Veritas and Germanischer Lloyd to last longer than standard bearings. With the introduction of the new bearing steel in 2011, SKF Explorer now claims to sets new standards for performance, reliability and operating life.

Sealing solution works well in waste processing Sensor monitors bearing condition

SRB split roller bearings are prov- ing successful in a water treatment process thanks to Revolvo’s innov- ative bearing sealing solution. The bearings have been speci- fied by Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) manufacturer

Better availability and lead times

Ovivo after other bearings were shown to fail under the harsh conditions. Revolvo sealed SRBs are designed to withstand full submersion in sludge, needing only routine re-greasing to last many years.

Each RBC has up to six mod- ules of four to six discs which rotate at 1-2rpm to assure proper growth of biological film on the disc. When water levels rise it is common that the shaft and bear- ings become fully submerged by the effluent. This can lead to bearings failing after a few months if they are not adequately sealed, as the consistency of the sludge makes ingress into the

R. A. Rodriguez now offers better availability and lead times on turntable bearings. This is thanks to a second wave of investment by the manufacturer that has resulted in the installation of extra machinery including a Pittler 5-axis machining centre.

The installation enables bearings with diameters of up to 1,600mm to be manufactured to high quality German standard, in-house. It will also allow the company to meet customers’ needs for small batches – typically 10 to 20 units – as well as prototypes. Specials can also be accommodated. Two versions of the Rodriguez turntable bearings are available, the KDL series for light applications where high accuracy is not a primary concern and the KDM series that provides a higher order of performance for greater loads. The full range of standard bearing diam- eters available in the Rodriguez range extends from 100mm to 3,900mm. R.A. Rodriguez T: 01462 670044

bearing’s components possible. Revolvo bearings have been well proven in many water treat- ment applications; the sealing solution that they have developed has allowed SRB split roller bear- ings to operate in fully submerged conditions for over five years with no more maintenance than standard regreasing required. Adrian Menzies, Revolvo’s sales and marketing director, says: “Thanks to a very effective sealing system our bearings are capable of surviving far longer than traditional bearings with no more than basic maintenance.” Revolvo

Energy saving bearings for motors

NSK has developed energy- saving bearings for high-effi- ciency motors that halve the friction loss of rolling bearings used in conventional products. The new bearings will contribute to a reduction of electric power consumption desired by users of high-efficiency motors.

Reducing CO2 emissions and saving energy have become increasingly important in recent years as global warming counter- measures. Motors account for 75 per cent of industrial power con- sumption and so efficiency regu- lations for motors are in place around the world.

The energy saving bearings are said to offer half the friction loss of conventional products due to optimisation of bearing design. Benefits include contributing to increased efficiency and better

energy-savings for motors. They conform not only to JIS motor efficiency standards but also to the IEC efficiency standards. This makes it possible to reduce the power consumption of bearings in industrial motors.

Reduced bearing friction loss means bearings operate at lower temperatures, increasing reliabil- ity of motors and other devices. NSK UK T: 0500 2327464 www.nskeurope.com Enter 330

A new sensor has been developed that enables the online condition monitoring of grease in rolling bearings. The sensor is suitable for monitoring critical plant and machinery located in difficult-to- access areas, such as wind turbines and automated assembly lines. The new grease sensor incorporates an electronic evaluation system, which enables the condition of the grease to be monitored whilst the bearings are operating. The sensor is positioned directly in the rolling bearing immersed in the grease.

This means the schedule for replac-

ing rolling bearing grease can now be planned precisely into maintenance schedules. Any changes in the condi- tion of the grease are detected early, long before any damage can be caused to the bearings. The grease sensor, which has a diameter of just 5mm and a length of 40mm, is able to detect four parame- ters of the grease: water content, cloudiness (opacity), wear (thermal or mechanical), and temperature. From these parameters, the sensor’s elec- tronic evaluation system utilises com- plex software algorithms to generate an analogue signal (4-20mA), which then displays the condition of the grease. By setting alarm thresholds, digital signal outputs can also be generated, indicat- ing whether the grease quality is ‘poor’ or ‘good’. Schaeffler T: 0121 313 5870 www.schaeffler.co.uk Enter 331
