Sick UK offers fifteen minutes of Safety at Drives and Controls

A

FIFTEEN minute visit to Sick UK’s stand (D1328) at the Drives and Controls Show could be a safe bet for engineers wanting an insight into new Functional Safety regulations. SICK is holding regular 15-minute ‘walk-throughs’ of the new machinery safety standards BS EN13849-1 & 2 for Safety Related Control Systems and the SISTEMA software utility.

Booking is advisable, although not

essential, and those who pre-register for sessions at 11am, 1pm and 3pm will be automatically entered into a daily iPod Touch draw. Sick will unveil its revolutionary Hiperface® DSL motor feedback interface technology for encoders at the show, promising machine builders an opportunity to achieve major cost and commissioning savings.

The

Hiperface DSL protocol is designed to carry comprehensive servo data from the motor to the drive electronics with reduced cabling requirements. It has also been developed with safe drive systems in mind and incorporates the redundancy and error checking required to achieve SIL2 (PLd) and SIL3 (PLe). Sick is also launching its first ethernet-based fieldbus encoders for the AFS60 and AFM60 family of freely programmable encoders, including Ethernet IP, EtherCAT and ProfiNET compatibility.

supplier for this project was Honeywell Life Safety Romania, with installation carried out by S.C. Proimsat S.A. The logistics centre’s storage halls, loading bays and cold room areas all benefit from the large area coverage of the FireRay 5000, which is specifically designed to protect such spacious indoor areas from fire risks. One single FireRay 5000 system, comprised of a low level controller, wall-mounted transceiver ‘head’ unit and reflective prism, can cover up to 1500m2 – an area that would need around 15 ‘point’ detectors to safely protect. In this project, the beams are protecting mostly the large goods storage rooms, working in conjunction with point detectors in areas of more limited space. The head unit, housing the beam transmitter and receiver, is installed on the wall high up near the ceiling, wired to the easily-accessible ground-level controller. The prismatic reflector, which needs no wiring, is positioned up to 100m away on the opposite wall. By bouncing the invisible infrared beam off the reflector, the head unit can detect the presence and density of smoke particles across the whole space between them, raising an alarm if the interference reaches a certain threshold.

BM has introduced the DWS2103 digital scale display to facilitate the set-up of legal-for-trade scales to meet the new European Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) and Directive 2009/23/EC for non-automatic weighing machines. The scale display works with analog and digital load cells such as FIT and C16I types. Analog load cells can also be connected via HBM’s AED digital transducer ensuring that automatic and non-automatic scales along with complete weighing systems can be easily realized. The new scale display is suitable for industrial applications where the control system is implemented via a PLC and standard field buses. Using HBM’s AED digital transducer electronics is ideal for upgrading these applications to a legal-for-trade solution easily and cost-effectively. Data transmission in the DWS2103 scale display is implemented with the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) process that works with a 256-bit key. This modern encryption algorithm meets the requirements of the WELMEC 7.2 guidelines. The possibility of data manipulation during transmission is thus prevented so that the legal-for-trade capability of a scale is always ensured. The DWS2103 has been awarded several type approvals for various types of automatic and non-automatic scales by the PTB, one of the appointed approval bodies in Europe.

safety systems samos® and samos® PRO. Wieland Electric has chosen Drives & Controls for the launch of a new range of multi function timers. Part of the flare® product family,

the range includes

control/measurement relays, phase monitoring, analogue converters interface relays and timers. The latest wietap range of overvoltage protection modules will also feature, with the advantage of a very short response time and a high discharge capacity. Designed for use in control cabinets, sub- distribution units of machines or buildings and in addition to photovoltaic systems, products in the wietap range will operate at temperatures ranging from -40°C to 80°C, provide a high discharge capacity and are available with an optional remote signalling contact.

The SEM1636 requires no

additional power connection as power is derived from the (4 to 20) mA loop. Trip outputs are independently configured for action and set point as well as dead band. Six actions are provided: normal High/Low/Deviation and inverted High/Low/Deviation. Additional filter and user linearisation functions are also provided. Easy to use, the SEM 1636 is fitted with a USB interface for quick and easy configuration. Users just need to connect a standard USB cable between the SEM1636 and their PC using Status Instruments’ free configuration software; the PC will automatically upload the existing configuration data and guide the user through any changes they wish to make.
