Weir YES exports wind sector expertise to Brasil

MINERALS OIL & GAS POWER & INDUSTRIAL WEIRBULLETIN | FEBRUARY 2012

Brasil, Latin America´s largest economy, is preparing for the busiest period of wind farm construction in its history.

Supported by its in-depth experience and sector knowledge in Europe, Weir YES established a Brasilian office in 2010 in Guarulhos in the state of São Paulo, rapidly becoming the first choice partner for key suppliers in this sector. In 2011, Suzlon chose Weir YES Brasil for

a contract for the mechanical and electrical installation of 44 to 45 turbines. Turbine models S88 and S95 will be installed near the cities of Mossoro in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, and Fortaleza in the state of Ceara. Weir YES Brasil has since been shortlisted for major construction projects throughout 2012. Brasil represents a major wind power opportunity. In 2001, the country’s first wind atlas was published, estimating wind power potential at around 143GW at 50 metres. In 2008 and 2009, new measurements carried out in several states at 80 to 100 metres indicate that the real potential is considerably higher, at more than 350GW. Large unpopulated land areas, a coastline of 9,650 km and excellent resources help secure Brasil’s prime position as a potential wind energy giant. The best proven wind resources are in the north/northeast region, and in particular in the states of Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Pernambuco and Bahia. The south/southeast also has good wind resources, especially in the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. Federal and private sector projects

totaling 2,435MW are contracted to come online over the next 12 months. A commitment from the Brasilian authorities to contract steady volumes of wind energy to meet growing demand should ensure a strong sector in meeting an ambition of 25 GW by 2020.

Weir Minerals opens direct sales and support base in Spain

Weir Minerals has launched its first sales and servicing base in Spain to

provide increased support to its growing customer base across the region. The company has supplied pumps and

other process equipment to the mining and aggregates sectors in the region through distribution partners for 30 years, but the new base will allow it to provide direct support to its customers.

The location of the new base – Getafe,

Madrid – was chosen because of its excellent transport links and central location within the Iberian Peninsula. A permanent team of Weir Minerals service technicians will be based at the centre so that larger repair and maintenance can be carried out close by, minimising potential delays. Tony Locke, Managing Director of

Weir Minerals Europe, said: “This is a key strategic move for Weir Minerals’ business in Spain, and the new base underpins our

new approach of working directly with end users, rather than via a distribution partner. “The equipment we supply is often critical to our customers’ operations, and any downtime can have a significant impact on the bottom line, so it is vital for customers to have technical support nearby. “The new facility will ensure we are able

to respond rapidly when reactive repair work is needed and allow us to deliver managed maintenance services efficiently.”
