Weir Power & Industrial plays its part in early project completion


Weir Power & Industrial’s service centre in Alloa, UK, played a major role in


completing a hydro power refurbishment project well ahead of schedule, alongside its alliance partner ANDRITZ HYDRO GmbH. The Lochaber aluminium production facility powerhouse modernisation project in Fort William, Scotland was commissioned by Rio Tinto Alcan.


The project required that the original 12


x 6MW Horizontal Twin Jet Pelton machines (installed in 1929) be replaced with 5 x 18MW Horizontal Francis machines. It was completed in three phases between 2009 and the end of 2011, with the powerhouse remaining in operation during the modernisation. Weir Power & IndustriaI was responsible


for the supply of replacement main inlet valves, the design and supply of other auxiliary equipment (such as the cooling water system) and the supply of qualifi ed personnel for site installation activities. ANDRITZ HYDRO GmbH’s responsibilities included the hydraulic design, the supply of the Francis turbines/ generators, associated turbine governors and control equipment.
